Malcolm Arnold Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In 1969 Malcolm Arnold was made a Bard of the Cornish Gorseth, he was awarded the C.B.E. in 1970 and received honorary doctorates from the universities of Exeter (1969), Durham (1982) and Leicester (1984).
Arnold's muse reveals a humanitarian and democratic spirit eager to transcend our sometimes all-too myopic musical landscape and ready to embrace rather than exclude the contrasting and multi-faceted temperaments of the human soul; and his compositions are filled with an ever-flowing musical invention that has a far-ranging emotional appeal.
Arnold was educated privately and at home, and this included tuition in violin, piano, violin, and later, the trumpet, the instrument with which he was to make his first real mark on the musical world.

Malcolm Arnold   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Sir Malcolm Arnold was born in Northampton on 21st October 1921.
With commissions pouring in at an ever-increasing rate; in the mid-fifties, Arnold was often bracketed with Benjamin Britten and William Walton as one of the most sought-after of the 'serious' composers in the country.
There is a scope in Arnold's music which reflects his profound concern with the human predicament and also his belief that music is "a social act of communication among people, a gesture of friendship, the strongest there is".

Classical Net - Composers - Arnold
More than most composers, Arnold's music is distinguished by its sound: rhythmically vital (if – at times – melodically quite brutally sparse), his extrordinary flair for orchestration (Shostakovich and Walton the most obvious influences) has combined with one of the most potent dramatic senses since Berlioz to create an unmistakable soundscape.
In some ways, Arnold is a chamber music composer writ large (solo instruments – particularly in the brass – tend to dominate a continuo-style orchestral texture); while his use of popular music styles (particularly jazz) is easily the equal of Heitor Villa-Lôbos.
As a composer, Arnold is as capable of riotous humor (the "Tam o' Shanter" overture or his wonderful "Hoffnung Festival" pastiches) as blistering despair (the Seventh and Ninth Symphonies).
