Malcolm Bruce might have been described as a shining wit by Dr Spooner during his tenure as Scottish Liberal Democrat leader and his popularity with the voters appeared to decline in inverse proportion to the number of times he appeared in TV debates.
As Malcolm Bruce's vote had fallen from 22,158 in 1992 to 17,999 in 1997, the increased majority was due to a collapse in the Tory vote which fell from 21,884 to 11,002.
Malcolm Bruce did not stand in the Scottish election, being one of those Liberal Democrats who had their eyes fixed on the leadership of the UK party and an eventual seat in a Tony Blair cabinet.

Pooh Corner: A HISTORY OF WINNIE-THE-POOH
A.A. Milne always acknowledged that it was his wife, Daphne, and his young son, Christopher Robin, who inspired him to write the poems and stories – the literary journey began in 1924 when the Very Young Christopher Robin was introduced to an American fl bear at the London Zoological Gardens.
Milne was immediately delighted with the drawings and agreed that Shepard should illustrate the poems.
The only connection to the history of Pooh in Christopher Milne's house was an enlargement of this photograph in a wood frame lovingly carved by him hanging at the top of the stairs of his home in Devon.
