Malcolm de Chazal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Malcolm de Chazal was a Mauritian writer, painter, and visionary, known especially for his Sens-Plastique, a work consisting of several thousand aphorisms and pensées.
And this is where Chazal's presence as a visionary begins: he is telling us things that we can't completely follow unless we decide to trust his revelations, trust them even when we fail to understand him completely.
Chazal’s other writings include notably La Vie Filtrée (1949), a collection of essays that elaborate upon the ideas found in Sens-Plastique, Sens Magique (1957) and Poémes (1968), gnomic verses that dramatize the experiences described in Sens-Plastique, and Petrusmok (1951), the spiritual history of Mauritius found in its natural surroundings.

Chazal's aphorisms are considered by literary critics to express the most remarkable correspondence between words and things, between language and nature, ever attempted.

MAURITIUS is currently celebrating the centenary of the birth of its philosopher and artist Malcolm de Chazal, commonly referred to as "old Malcolm", but not to be confused with the famous French artist of similar name, Chagal.
In fact, the very first original painting I ever bought, back in 1977, was a Chazal of a green fish with purple spots, for which I paid 475 Mauritian rupees, then the equivalent of R40.
Chazal, who wore a brown felt hat, fl alpaca coat like a bank teller, bow tie and glasses, hardly resembled the popular conception of an artist.

In Auden and Kronenberger's Viking Book of Aphorisms, Chazal's contributions are given almost as much space as any of the great French aphorists, like La Rochefoucauld, Vauvenargues, La Bruyère, but unlike them he is not essentially a moralist.
In the 1960's the president of Senegal, Léopold Sédar Senghor, himself a poet of international renown, who considered Chazal an "African" poet-painter who celebrated the oceanic refulgence and tropical intensities of the part of the world they shared, nominated him for the Nobel Prize for literature.
