Malden Island is located 446 km (241 nautical miles) south of the equator, 2840 km (1530 nautical miles) south of Honolulu, Hawaii, and more than 8000 km (4000 nautical miles, 5000 statute miles) west of the coast of South America.
Malden was claimed by the U.S. Guano Company under the Guano Islands Act of 1856, which authorized citizens to take possession of uninhabited islands under the authority of the United States for the purpose of removing guano, a valuable agricultural fertilizer.
Malden was reserved as a wildlife sanctuary and closed area, officially designated the Malden Island Wildlife Sanctuary, on 29 May 1975, under the 1975 Wildlife Conservation Ordinance.

Malden Catholic also won four games in the MIAA Division 1 State Baseball Tournament, defeating four separate league champions in the process, before falling to St. John's Prep in the Division 1 North Sectional Championship Game, the second time the Lancers had been to that game in the past four years.
