The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is a political party of the Maldives.
Although the MDP was not recognized by the Maldivian government, it began operating in Maldives on April 30, 2005, with its Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) returning to the country from exile.
MDP was the first organization to submit its registration on June 9 and was promptly registered on June 26, 2005.

Male’ The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Islamic Democratic Party have said they would not take part in the all-party talks aimed at drafting a new constitution which is scheduled to begin on 5 February 2005.
Earlier, the MDP had welcomed the government’s initiative to convene all party consultations which was announced on 10 November 2005.
The Islamic Democratic Party is unwilling to take part in a dialogue which would be mediated by a foreign party.

Before June 3, political parties were not permitted as was evident from an opinion given by the Attorney-General and a decision by the People's Majlis (Parliament) to disallow the formation of political parties, both in 2001.
The DRP is led by President Gayoom, the MDP by Mohammed Nasheed, a historian, and the Islamic Democratic Party by Omar Naseer, a businessman.
Political parties, he said, "are crucial to the effective functioning of a modern democracy and represent an indispensable mechanism for the people to exercise their rights and to give expression to political pluralism in the best interests of the nation".

The Maldivian Democratic Party endorsed 36 candidates for the 42 elected seats up for grabs in the Majlis elections (originally they backed 37, but one pulled out).
Given that the number of independents vs government candidates is widely disputed, let us mainly focus on the performance of the 18 elected candidates the MDP publicly endorsed on the 10th December, plus the one more the party has subsequently claimed.
It is apparent that the government polled strongly in the northern atolls of the Maldives, and the MDP strongly in the southern atolls.

International pressure and local dissent has forced the regime of Gayyoom to allow the registration of political parties and the party was officially registered in June 2005.

When contacted, MDP headquarters in Male told a staff of the AHRC that the Maldives government did not inform either them or his family the exact reason for Nasheed's arrest for 10 days and then suddenly charged him with sedition and terrorism under very suspicious circumstances.
The MDP claims that Nasheed has never spoken publicly or otherwise of an attempt to overthrow the government violently.
The MDP spokesman in Male also alleged that the government charged Nasheed simply based on a statement of a person who claimed that Nasheed told him "privately" about his alleged offense.
