 Walking informal education - Great Russell Street to Fitzrovia
A few yards further up the street is the old YWCA Central Club (16-22) which for some time housed the headquarters of the movement (designed by Lutyens).
The building on the corner of Gower Street and Montagu Place was home to Henry Cavendish, the scientist who discovered the contents of water (H2O), until his death in 1810.
Originally on Gower Street (demolished for university buildings), this YMCA is run by the National Council of Indian YMCAs for Indian students.

 Dramatic Regeneration Architectural Review, The - Find Articles
The Malet Street theatre block was built in 1921 to a design by Geoffrey Norman, and the Gower Street building in 1927, when the original Georgian texture of the area was being torn apart by the colossal expansion of London University.
There was no proper connection between the Gower and Malet Street sides because the Vanbrugh (entered from Malet Street) filled the whole of the middle of the block.
The public side, which gives access to the theatres, is on Malet Street, and here, the transformation is immediately apparent.

 Historic Walk - Chenies Street Chambers and its Neighbourhood
Continue along the north side of Chenies Street, noting the sweep of the North Crescent to your left, and the Minerva statue on the front of the former Minerva House (circa early 1920's), behind the Eisenhower Centre (circa 1940's) and the Rangers War Memorial Monument in front of it (erected in 1923).
The occupants were ordered to renumber their houses by the 12th of June, 1877 (without further research, it is difficult to decide how the six buildings in 1877 become three in 2002.
Since we are on the corner of Huntley and Chenies Street, we know the houses occupying numbers 21 and 20 pre-1877 make up part of the area of our building, and we suspect that 19 and possibly 18 made up the area as well (numbers 9, 11,13,15 after June 1877).
