Malicorne was founded by (additional info and facts about Gabriel Yacoub) Gabriel Yacoub and Marie Yacoub in 1974.
Since several of their albums are called simply "Malicorne" it had become the custom to refer to them by number, even though no number appears on the cover.
All of Malicorne's songs were in French, apart from a few words of English on their final album.

 Gnosis Ratings
While Malicorne was still far away from experimenting with rock and other fusions, by their debut they had already set themselves apart from the average folk group by the quartet's unusual and forward-thinking arrangement skills.
Malicorne's second eponymous album (which bears a yellow cover with a tree/house in front and whose first song is "Le Mariage Anglais") was anything but a sophomore slump, and might even be the best in a series of powerful studio albums.
Malicorne's final studio album for Hexagone returned to their habit of not titling albums, this one picturing a grandfather and son looking at a constellation of two twin mythical beasts in a late evening sky.

Malicorne was founded by Gabriel Yacoub and Marie Yacoub in 1974.
Malicorne 1 consisted of the Yacoubs, Laurent Vercambre and Hughes de Courson.
The combination of electric guitar, violin, dulcimer, bouzouki and female vocalist immediately brings to mind Steeleye Span, their English equivalent.

Malicorne was less generous; he assumed noble _poses_ in his _fauteuil_ and stretched himself out with a familiarity which, two hours earlier, would have drawn upon him threats of a caning.
Malicorne was a vile name; he who bore it had too much wit to conceal this truth from himself; but an estate might be purchased; and Malicorne of some place, or even De Malicorne itself, for short, would ring more nobly on the ear.
By her means, Malicorne learnt all that passed at Blois, in the family of the dowager Madame; and he related to Manicamp tales that made him ready to die with laughing, which the latter, out of idleness, took ready-made to M. de Guiche, who carried them to Monsieur.

Ectophiles' Guide - Malicorne   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Malicorne's early albums (up to Quintessence) are mostly slightly electric arrangements of traditional songs and sound very much like a French version of Steeleye Span, updating and electrifying traditional tunes and songs, but keeping the vocal harmonies and techniques intact.
Malicorne's brand of edgy traditional music with the added spice of being a live performance.
This was originally intended as a solo project for Gabriel Yacoub, but was released as by Malicorne because of the weight the name carries in France.

I can keep three quite as well as one." Malicorne and Montalais looked at each other, like children detected in a theft; but as Malicorne saw a great advantage in the proposition which had been made to him, he gave Montalais a sign of assent, which she returned.
Malicorne then descended the ladder, round by round, reflecting at every step on the means of obtaining piecemeal from M. de Saint-Aignan all he might possibly know about the famous secret.
As for Saint-Aignan, he carried off Malicorne with him to his apartments, showing him a thousand attentions, enchanted to have so close at hand the very two men who, even supposing De Guiche were to remain silent, could give him the best information about the maids of honor.

FolkWorld Article: Gabriel Yacoub and Malicorne
"I think Malicorne gave to younger people a kind of an open window to that kind of music, saying this is not limited to certain kinds of instruments, or certain styles of singing or certain kind of arranging songs.
And still today, listening to the old Malicorne recordings, you never would get the feeling that this is out of date music, it sounds in no way like music with the dust of the early seventies, but still today very innovative and exciting.
As all things need to have an end, as good as they might be, Malicorne split after a bit less than ten years, a couple of CD recordings and a lot of concerts.

Chapter 5 - Manicamp And Malicorne - Ten Years Later by Alexandre Dumas: - Literature - eLook.org
Malicorne, then, left Blois, as we have said, and went to find his friend, Manicamp, then in temporary retreat in the city of Orleans.
Manicamp stretched himself like a serpent in his bed, and fixing his two great eyes upon Malicorne, "You are right," said he; "I could not return before to-morrow;" and he took the twenty pistoles.
Malicorne took up the pen, ink, and paper again, and presented them all to Manicamp.

Malicorne's main weakness is in the quality of the mix, which is muddy.
One of Malicorne's peculiarities was to keep on putting out eponymous LPs; their second was also simply entitled Malicorne [Hexagone CD 193.652 (1975)]; most critics call it Malicorne II.
As for the songs, Malicorne's best-known piece of a capella harmonizing, "Marions les roses" is here, as are some classic songs in the vein of the first album's material: historical ballads, songs about courtship, and a brief taste of potentially supernatural motifs, which would become a trademark of the band in the future.

Gabriel Yacoub and Malicorne at cdRoots
This is often cited as Malicorne's greatest recording, and while I have my personal favorites from later in their discography, I can't argue with the accolades this one has garnered over the last 2 and a half decades.
This is the 1973 "acoustic Malicorne" recording of 1973, for some reason put under just the Yacoub name, but featuring all the major players from the band.
But it is also the recording that placed Malicorne in the new European avant garde, bringing the nation into the 'new roots' movement that Britain had already started.

Malicorne was rolling his hat respectfully between his fingers; but, all at once, he let fall his hat, seized the young girl by the shoulders, pulled her towards him, and sealed her mouth with two lips that were very warm, for a man pretending to so much indifference.
Malicorne was less generous; he assumed noble poses in his fauteuil and stretched himself out with a familiarity which, two hours earlier, would have drawn upon him threats of a caning.
Malicorne, we know, had made the journey to Orleans in search of the brevet destined for Mademoiselle de Montalais, the arrival of which had produced such a strong feeling at the castle of Blois.

Fresh out of Alan Stivell [+]'s band, Gabriel Yacoub [+] recorded the first album by his own group, Malicorne [+], and made sure that despite the fact that he, too, was taking the folk revivalist route, the group's music would come out as being very different.
This first of two self-titled albums (this one has a light peach-colored cover and displays a photo of the band) offers a fine selection of traditional folk songs from the regions of Berry, Poitou, Savoie, and the Limousin, along with two songs from the French Canadian songbook.
Slower numbers, such as "La Pernette" and "Le Deuil d'Amour," require a little more getting used to, as they bring forth the nasal singing of the Yacoubs (Gabriel and Marie).
