Malin Head Coastal Radio Station has been receiving and sending the transmissions of seafarers through two world wars, the Irish War of Independence, the Irish Civil War, the setting up of the Irish Free State, the formation of the Irish Republic and all that has passed since.
It is recorded in the 'Derry Journal' that the original Malin Head station came into operation at Banba's Crown on January 1st, 1902 almost 24 years before the establishment of RTE and nearly 20 years before BBC radio came into being.
In 2000 the station was redesignated as a marine rescue sub centre and renamed as the Malin Head Division of the Irish Coast Guard with a vast operating area of ocean and coastline, spanning from Inishowen Head to Slyne Head to 15 degrees west in the Atlantic ocean.

The Malin Head Wireless Station was situated in the Lloyds signal tower and access to the station for personnel was made along the beach by foot from the staff accomodation about one and a quarter miles east of Malin Head pier.
Malin Head was included in the rebuilding program for coast stations around the British Isles in 1913 and the callsign changed to GMH.
Malin Head Radio was certainly getting out well and the location of the station being close to the sea on two sides and built on marshy low lying ground was well chosen.

At Malin head and the clock ticking away a huge group of followers, family members, enthusiasts awaited the arrival of the 30 cyclists made up of I tandem pair Denis Toomey and Billy Shannahan (Visual impaired) 2 lady cyclists Mary Mulchrone and Ashling Daly and the 26 strong men.
The riders attempting to cover the 366.53 miles from Mizen Head in Cork to Malin Head in Co. Donegal in under 24 hours were successful in their attempt this weekend, completing the distance in a total time of 20 hours 55 minutes and 33 seconds.

It is believed the two teenagers were trying to get to a beach party at Malin Head when they slipped on steps leading down the cliff at around 1am.
The teenage girl suffered head injuries and underwent emergency surgery at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.
She was on holiday from England and is understood to have close connections with the Malin area.

Something that has not changed was the open friendliness of the locals, most said hello or asked were we were heading as we passed, if we had stopped to look at our route sheets many took the time to ask if we needed help, some even stopped their cars to do so.
As we headed further North the newer properties started to thin out and although the scenery was less picturesque in many ways I preferred it, as we started to see more of the Ireland I remembered and what I was expecting to see, with more open spaces and older style cottages.
