Malkata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Malkata (or Malqata) is a place located on the west bank of Thebes, Egypt, in Egypt, in the desert south of Medinet Habu.
There are various structures in the desert, consisting of several residential palaces, a temple of Amun, a festival hall, elite villas, houses for the relatives of the Royal Family, apartments for attendants, and a desert altar termed the Kom al-Samak, all of which were constructed by mud bricks.
Originally the palace was known as the Palace of the Dazzling Aten.

Malkata is the site of a palace complex of King Amenhetep III at western Thebes, and adjacent to it lies the Birket Habu, a gigantic artificial basin still ringed by the great earthwork created by the spoil of digging it out.
Although the excavations are scheduled to continue, by the end of 1974 the basic character and stratigraphy of this remarkable site had become clear and sufficient detail had been obtained to justify publishing the first group of final reports.
Both the hieratic labels and the hieroglyphic stamps are reproduced in facsimile, together with transcriptions of the hieratic, translation and commentary.

Malkata, Palace of the Sun King Today
This was in contrast to previous rulers who were based at the traditional capital Memphis in the north, and only came south to Thebes for the annual religious festivals, where they set up temporary court in palace buildings attached to Karnak temple.
Following the discovery of Malkata in 1888, subsequent excavations have revealed a massive site sprawling over 30 hectares which was still being added to and embellished at the time of Amenhotep's death.
In such letters we finally hear the voice of the king who not only built the splendid palace of Malkata, but also the temple of Luxor, parts of Karnak and the largest of all Egyptian funerary temples which once stretched out behind the Colossi of Memnon, the only part that is still visible today.

 THEBES and the West Bank
On the West bank, the Valley of the Kings became the burial place of the New Kingdom rulers from at least as early as the reign of Thutmose I (1504-1492 BC).
A number of Royal palaces were also built on the West bank, ranging from small buildings attached to mortuary temples, to the sprawling complex of buildings at Malkata (from the reign of Amenhotep III).
During the Ramesside period, when the royal palace and the central administration were transferred to the Delta, Thebes retained a great deal of its religious and political significance, and the bodies of the rulers were still bought to the Valley of the Kings for burial.
