  Mall - Encyclopedia Dramatica
In the never-ending quest to come up with the new and novel for the MTV watchers, mall stores often raid subcultures on the margins of pop culture for fashion for the normals.
Grunge listeners spent hours scouring thrift stores for flannel shirts and dirty jeans, for example, but when "Teen Spirit" hit the airwaves every kid in middle America had the perfect grunge uniform at their local Hot Topic for half the inconvenience and ten times the cost.
Older clubbing goths even use the term "mall goth" as a perjorative, as though those tired old batcavers had some claim to really being vampires.

"Mall Goth" is a disparaging colloquialism for someone who is supposedly not a "real" Goth, whose commitment to the Gothic is seen as shallow, pretentious, or dependent on commercially purchased, mass-marketed "Goth" clothes.
However, "mallgoth" is more likely to be used by those who think of themselves as "true" Goths, whereas mallcore/nu-metal is usually defined by those who consider themselves fans of "true heavy metal." Those who listen to the music of Marilyn Manson, KoЯn, and Slipknot may be referred to as "mall goths".
