Mallaig lies at the end of the evocatively named "Road to the Isles." It is also the terminus for the West Highland Railway from Fort William and the focus for a network of ferry services to Skye, to the Small Isles, and to the Knoydart peninsula.
Since the opening of the Skye Bridge in 1995, Mallaig is the main ferry terminus for Skye with sailings to Armadale, near the toe of the Sleat Peninsula.
Mallaig is also the main hopping off point for those wanting to catch a ferry to the islands of Rum, Eigg and Muck (though summer sailings are also available from Arisaig).

HIGHLAND Council is preparing to get the Mallaig Harbour redevelopment back on course after a stormy five years during which the Harbour Authority's income was arrested by court order, following a dispute over the actual cost of the new £7m breakwater.
The breakwater was to have sparked developments to make Mallaig the premier west coast port in the Highlands.
The Order requests permission for a new jetty at Inverie in Knoydart and for a new breakwater in Mallaig which will stretch beyond the lighthouse onto the outer skerry in the rock ridge on which the lighthouse has been built.

Chairman Councillor Andy Anderson moved adoption of the Mallaig option which defeated by 17 votes to 6 an amendment by the Council’s Gaelic spokesman, Councillor Hamish Fraser, that a dedicated Gaelic Medium Unit be established at Morar.
At the end of the debate, Councillor Anderson agreed that the Committee should investigate the issues involved in establishing a bilingual school in Highland, with Mallaig a possible pilot.
As the decision will change the pattern of provision for Gaelic Medium pupils from Arisaig, which is excess of five miles from Mallaig Primary, the matter requires referral to the Scottish Executive.
