When you do a movie like Clerks, then a movie like Mallrats that goes right in the shitcan, everyone says, "Ha ha, wiseass." So rather than subject yourself to that, you steal their thunder by saying it first.
There's this infamous moment where I was on stage giving an award away with Laura Dern, and I opened up by saying, "I want to take this time to apologize for Mallrats.
I don't know what I was thinking." It was said in a very tongue-in-cheek fashion; it was a joke.

When Mallrats hit the screen in 1995, Kevin Smith an Indie auteur known for his low budget 1994 debut Clerks.
Critically, Smith renewed himself with 1997's Chasing Amy, and as the years have passed Mallrats grew a cult audience to the point that Smith no longer looks down at the film — on this DVD he now mentions that Jersey Girl (2004) has become the red-headed stepchild of his oeuvre.

 Mallrats - Movie Review
Well, the long-awaited Mallrats is here at last, and sadly, the perfect twentysomething romantic comedy has still yet to be made.
Mallrats tells the story of two mostly-losers, T.S. (Jeremy London) and Brodie (Jason Lee), who manage to lose and regain their respective girlfriends, Brandi (Claire Forlani) and Rene (Shannen Doherty), in one long day at the mall.
Mallrats probably wouldn't be so painful if I didn't know what Smith was capable of doing (and with a lot less funding, to boot).

 Mallrats . Tucson Weekly . 11-02-95
Mallrats is to Clerks what Desperado is to El Mariachi; or even, at a stretch, what Clueless was to Fast Times at Ridgemont High: a low-budget movie with a brand-new studio expense account, written and directed by a young filmmaker with, apparently, only one original idea in his head.
For those of you who either glossed over analogies on the SAT or don't know what the hell I'm talking about, Mallrats is a day in the life of Brodie and T.S., who head off to the mall to escape the pain of being dumped by their girlfriends.
Maybe Mallrats was the movie he wanted to make the first time around and didn't have the money; but let's hope that when Jay and Silent Bob return--as he promises they will--they'll have a new story to tell.

I prefer to think that Smith, who has a sharp ear for dialogue, has other shots in his cannon, and that Mallrats is to Clerks what Robert Rodriguez's Desperado was to his El Mariachi: a name-star, bigger-budget version of the fledgling auteur's no-frills calling card.
Maybe I shouldn't criticize Smith for returning to the same ground in the $7 million Mallrats that he covered in the $27,000 Clerks; after all, Quentin Tarantino's sophomore effort was Pulp Fiction, not much of a genre jump from Reservoir Dogs.
Yet I watched Mallrats feeling that Smith had already handed in a brilliant first draft with Clerks, and that Mallrats, though printed on better paper and free of typos, is an unnecessary second draft.
