One of the largest of the Marshall Islands atolls, Maloelap (right in the image) is located in the Ratak chain of eastern atolls, lying directly to the north of Majuro.
All of the main islets of Maloelap (Airuk, Jang, Kaven, Tarwa and Wolot) are located on the northern, eastern and southern sides of the atoll, lying on a continuous and unbroken length of reef.
The western side of the atoll consists mainly of a series of fragmented reefs, shallow passes and a number of smaller islets.

 Antiquity, Project Gallery: Weisler
Low coral atolls are the most precarious landscapes for human habitation since they have limited land area, humus-poor, undeveloped coralline soils and potable subterranean water restricted to the largest islets of an atoll.
Four atolls were selected for study: Utrik Atoll in the dry north, Ujae and Maloelap atolls (Figure 2) in the middle of the archipelago and Ebon Atoll in the wet south.
Although human colonists were initially drawn to the atolls for harvesting the untapped stocks of fish, molluscs and huge sea-bird colonies, the backbone of Marshallese terrestrial subsistence was based on the cultivation of Giant swamp taro (Cyrtosperma chamissonis) which was grown in pits with heavily mulched soils (Figure 4; Weisler 1999b).

She put to sea from Kwajalein Atoll on 7 December 1945 and steamed by way of Pearl Harbor and San Diego to arrive in the Boston Naval Shipyard on 25 January 1946.

In the north, at the apex of the triangle, the recently activated 4th Marine Division, commanded by Major General Harry Schmidt, a veteran of the Nicaraguan campaign, was to seize Roi-Namur, twin islands joined by a causeway and a narrow strip of beach.
Originally, most of the weapons emplaced on the larger islands of the atoll had been sited to protect the ocean beaches, but since the Tarawa operation, in which the Marines had attacked from the lagoon, the garrisons were strengthening and rearranging their defenses.
The atoll garrison was believed to be composed of the 6th Base Force, 61st Naval Guard Force, a portion of the 122d Infantry Regiment, and a detachment of the 4th Civil Engineers.

HyperWar: USMC Monograph--The Marshalls: Increasing the Tempo
On 23 December, Majuro Atoll was revealed as the selected "Island 'X' " to be secured, and on receipt of this decision on 26 December, General Holland Smith set up the Majuro Landing Force, consisting of the 2d Battalion, 106th Infantry, with the V Amphibious Corps Reconnaissance Company and the 1st Defense Battalion, FMF, attached.
In order for Majuro Atoll to qualify as an additional objective, it had to fulfill the description of "lightly held." Intelligence officers came to the conclusion that there were few, if any, defensive installations on its islands and "small" defensive forces.
Inasmuch as Kwajalein Atoll was the hub of military and naval activity for the Marshalls, it naturally contained the largest single garrison force--8,000 troops.
