		The Canton of Schwyz is divided into six districts and 30 municipalities, although the districts Einsiedeln, Küssnacht and Gersau simply comprise the municipality of the same name.
		Canton of Glarus is not divided into districts: the muncipility is the next lower unit of government.

		Its length by carriage road from the Maloja plateau (5935 ft.) at its south-western end to Martinsbruck (3406 ft.) at its north-eastern extremity is about 59 m.
		But both the Maloja plateau and the south-western half of the lake of Sils belong to the commune of Stampa in the Val Bregaglia, and are included in the Bregaglia administrative district, so that, from a political point of view, Sils is the first village that is included in the Engadine.
		The Maloja (593~ ft.) is the route from Chiavenna and the Lake of Como to the Upper Engadine, which is also reached from Coire by the Julier (7504 ft.) and the Albula Passes (~5g5 ft.) as well as from Tirano in the Valtellina by the Bernina Pass (7645 ft.).

		It is well situated on the right bank of the Mera, at the mouth of the Val Bregaglia, through which the road to the Maloja Pass and the Engadine runs to the east.
		Chiavenna is crowned by a ruined castle, once an important strategic point, and the seat of the counts who ruled the valley from the time of the Goths till 1194, when the district was handed over to the bishops of Coire.
		In the 14th century the Visconti, having become masters of the Valtellina, bought the county (contado or contea) of Chiavenna from the bishop of Coire; but it was taken by the canton of the Grisons in 1523, and the castle dismantled.

		The District of the Upper Engadine For the geographer the Upper Engadine begins at the highest point of the Maloja pass, from a historical-political point of view, however, only at the boundary where the district of Bergell begins, which is a line north of Isola running across the lake of Sils.
		From this line the district of the Upper Engadine comprises the whole valley of the Inn with its tributaries as far as Punt ota, the High Bridge, between Cinuoschel and Brail.
		The geographical importance of the Julier, Maloja, and the Bernina passes, as well as the road through the valley, brought the Upper Engadine many drawbacks during times of upheaval such as the wars in the Grisons.

		From a historical-political point of view, however, as can clearly be seen from a study of the boundaries of this Italian-speaking district, it goes beyond the Maloja Pass up to the middle of the Lake of Sils, into the Fedoz Valley, and includes the upper part of the Madriser Valley which belongs geographically to Avers.
		The fact that the waters of this district flow into three different seas, i.e., the North Sea, the Adriatic, and the Black Sea, is most certainly unique.

		Heinzenberg district merged with Hinterrhein; Münstertal district merged with Inn; Oberlandquart and Unterlandquart districts repartitioned to form Landquart and Prättigau/Davos (probably part of Unterlandquart was removed and attached to Oberlandquart, with the remainder of Unterlandquart becoming Landquart); Glenner and Vorderrhein districts merged to form Surselva.
		When the name of a district is the same as the name of a canton, or the capital of a canton, its variant names will also be the same.

		The literature describes the Maloja as an Alpine Pass, which is in fact not really true.
		The Maloja is in real just a road, connecting the North Italian lake district with the Engadine highland.
