MALONE — Plans to build a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Route 11 gained momentum Wednesday when the Malone Town Council found no significant environmental impacts would result from the $12 million project.
Andrew Leja outlined the 11 criteria the town had to consider before making its negative declaration, including but not limited to potential impacts on the air quality, traffic patterns, drainage, soil erosion, noise, damage to flower or plant species and whether anything historical would be destroyed or ruined as a result of the project.
Town Council members were all set to vote on the SEQR application two weeks ago, but held off a vote to give residents a chance to read and review the bulky file that describes in detail the Wal-Mart proposal.

The Malone Town Council is proposing a new local law that would effectively prevent a large-scale wind project from locating in the town.
Malone Supervisor Howard Maneely announced a series of proposed zoning ordinances that would essentially prohibit wind towers from being built in the town.
Maneely said the town would have received 19 percent of a $400,000 payment in lieu of taxes, which he felt was not enough to offset the impact of the project.
