Nephrons regulate water and soluble substances (especially electrolytes) in the body by filtering it all out first, reabsorbing what should be kept and converting the rest into urine for excretion.
A nephron consists of an initial filtering component called the renal corpuscle (or Malpighian corpuscle), and a renal tubule that extends from the renal corpuscle.
Each renal corpuscle contains a compact bunch of interconnected capillaries called the "glomerulus", which protrudes into the Bowman's capsule.

The diagram at the right-hand side of the lower part of the figure illustrates the connexions of the structures composing a Malpighian corpuscle.
There is reason to believe that we have here a pronephros of a very primitive type and arranged on the same plan, in many respects, as the simple nephridia of such lowly forms as the earthworm.
In the Amphibia the snake-like forms (Gymnophiona) show a very primitive arrangement of the kidney tubules, each having its nephrostome, Malpighian capsule and short convoluted part leading to the Wolffian duct which acts both as ureter and vas deferens.

Renal corpuscle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
A renal corpuscle is the initial filtering component of a nephron in the kidney.
A renal corpuscle is also known as a Malpighian corpuscle, named after Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694), an Italian physician and biologist.
This name is not used widely anymore, probably to avoid confusion with a Malpighian corpuscle in the spleen.

The glomerulus surrounded by Bowman's capsule together are called a renal corpuscle (Malpighian corpuscle).
The cortex is where the renal corpuscles (glomeruli plus Bowman's capsules) and most of the nephric tubule is located.
The medulla does not have any renal corpuscles, but is composed of nephric tubules, collecting ducts and numerous capillaries.

Kidney, Nephrons, Blood Vessels and Renal Corpuscle
A complete series of 3 models (K10, K10/1 and K10/2) to study the kidney with their important structures enlarged to show greater detail.
Togeher they show: • A longditudinal section of the kidney, 3 times life size • A nephron depicting a section through renal cortex and medulla and features the renal corpuscles with proximal and distal convoluted tubules, loops of Henle, collecting tubules and blood vessels.
• The third section shows an opened Malpighian corpuscle with glomerulus and Bowman's capsule.

Opisthonephric nephrostomial tubules begin to appear at the end of the first week after hatching and are regularly segmentally arranged and completely developed in the period between 10 and 35 days after hatching.
Fully differentiated nephrostomial tubules connect the vestibular area of the Malpighian corpuscle with the coelomic cavity as short, open canals.
The nephrostomial tubule is lined by one layer of cuboidal or low-columnar cells, equipped with an apical set of long kinocilia, which point generally in the direction of the Malpighian corpuscle.
