Malpighian tubule system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is unclear as to whether the Malpighian tubules of arachnids and those of the Uniramia are homologous or the result of convergent evolution.
Malpighian tubules are slender tubes normally found in the posterior regions of arthropod alimentary canals.
Hemipteran insects use tubules that permit movement of solutes into the distal portion of the tubules while reabsobtion of water and essential ions directly to the hemolymph occurs in the proximal portion and the rectum.

Drosophila tissue and organ development: Malpighian tubules
Therefore Krüppel is responsible for cell fate in the Malpighian tubules, a function quite distinct from Krüppel's role as a gap gene.
The two anterior Malpighian tubules are classically described as comprising a distal initial segment and a proximal main segment, joined by a narrow transitional segment; the two posterior tubules, in contrast, were thought to consist solely of a main segment.
None of the enhancer trap markers mark cells in the lower tubule or ureter, suggesting that the mechanism by which type II cells are specified respects the newly defined lower tubule boundary.

 Biology - Bee Behavior
Since this protozoan is found in the Malpighian tubules of adult bees, diagnosis can be made only by the removal and microscopic examination of the tubules for the presence of amoeba cysts.
The Malpighian tubules are long, threadlike projections originating at the junction of the midgut and the hindgut.
The tubules can be teased away from the digestive tract with a pair of fine tweezers and then placed in a drop of water on a microscope slide.

The polytene chromosomes obtained in the pupal Malpighian tubules showed fragile structures (Figure), however the availability of suitable slides was 4% (58 out of the approximately 1,383 slides).
The pupal Malpighian tubule polytene chromosomes showed conspicuous structural characteristics suitable for their use in the location of resistance and vector competence genes.

 CHAPTER SEVEN
With respect to insects, the most general physiological expression is that ions and water are secreted by Malpighian tubules and they are selectively resorbed in hindguts.
We treated Malpighian tubules with eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors, then observing the effects of the inhibition on fluid secretion rates in adult females of the mosquito Aedes aegypti.
Increased Malpighian tubule and rectal fluid secretion rates is thought to serve a function that goes beyond homeostasis of salt and water balance in insects.

Contributions of K+:Cl- cotransport and Na+/K+-ATPase to basolateral ion transport in malpighian tubules of Drosophila melanogaster.
Mechanisms of Na+ and K+ transport across the basolateral membrane of isolated Malpighian tubules of Drosophila melanogaster were studied by examining the effects of ion substitution and putative inhibitors of specific ion transporters on fluid secretion rates, basolateral membrane potential and secreted fluid cation composition.
In cyclic-AMP-stimulated tubules, K+ entry is stimulated by the increase in the apical membrane potential, which drives K+:Cl- cotransport at a faster rate, and by the stimulation of the Na+/K+-ATPase.
