Sarangani Province’s history dates back to the turn of the 15th Century when Sarip Kabungsuan of Arabia arrived in Cotabato Province in Mindanao to introduce Islam with the help of religious teachers.
Sarangani Province constitutes the seven municipalities formerly under South Cotabato Province, such as the coastal municipalities of Glan, Alabel, Malapatan, Kiamba, Maasim, and Maitum and the upland Municipality of Malungon.
Of the total land area of Sarangani, it is estimated that about 12% are considered pasture land, 68% are forest lands, and 20% are croplands and the built-up areas are incorporated in this land classification which covers 2% of the total land area.

MALUNGON, Sarangani (MindaNews/6 April 2002) -- Guillermo "Jun" Constantino caught two tarsiers and displayed them to provincial government and tourism officials and selected journalists at his garden home with only one goal in mind: to prove that the endangered tarsiers exist in this part of the country.
It is not certain as yet if the Tarsiers found in Sarangani are of the same species as Bohol's Tarsius syrichta, a subspecies of it, or of another species found in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
It was news to Sarangani officials but not to Lumads such as the B'laans and T'bolis, who said they have long known that tarsiers, called "mal" in their language, exist in the province.

Malungon is the only landlocked town in this seven-town coastal province, while Maitum is its westernmost town.
The presence of tarsiers appears to be province-wide because Lumads in Glan, the last town in the east coast, also reported sightings in lowland and coastal barangays.

A known ally of the late dictator, he was replaced as mayor of Malungon during the Aquino administration.
