This call reawakened my interest in the history of the discovery of the mauve factor, which characterized a syndrome we called malvaria and which we later identified as kryptopyrrole.
At one time I considered calling kryptopyrrole the X factor, “X” standing for her name, but I could not break the confidentially of the patient and we settled for the color term, mauve factor and later malvaria.

Urinary pyrrole, also known as the mauve factor (malvaria), pyrroluria and krypto- pyrrole, was first described in the 1950s.
Sohler, in 1967, using 24-hour urine specimens found malvaria in 60% of chronic schizophrenic patients; it was absent in most normal patients.
He postulated that the mauve factor was composed of pyrroles or furans from the breakdown of amino sugars, or the interactions of amino acids and carbohydrates.

In 1963 Doctors Abram Hoffer and Humphrey Osmond coined the name ‘malvaria’ for those patients who had a mauve factor in their urine.
Extensive testing showed that the mauve factor occurred in about one out of three confined in a psychiatric hospital.

There is one main indication for using this for schizophrenics, This is the condition know as pyrolleuria.
It is diagnosed by a urine test which measure for the presence of kryptopyrole, a compound we originally called malvaria, Hoffer (1965, 1966), Hoffer and Mahon (1961), Hoffer and Osmond (1961, 1963).
If the urine test is not available it can be suspected by a few clear physical signs such as white areas in the finger nails, stretch marks on the body, premenstrual tension.
