In the same family as Hibiscus (Malvaceae), Malvaviscus is a genus of thicket-forming shrubs that have Hibiscus-like flowers that only partially unfurl, giving them a twisted, turban-like form, from which the stamens protrude.
Malvaviscus arboreus, is called Turk’s Cap, Wax Mallow, and Sleepy Mallow.

Malvaviscus is a genus of three species of shrubs in the mallow family Malvaceae, native to tropical America from Florida and Mexico south to Peru and Brazil.
The flowers resemble those of the related genus Hibiscus, except that the petals are folded spirally, and open only a short way to form a tube-shaped flower, to encourage pollination by hummingbirds.
Common names include Turk's cap Mallow (Malvaviscus arboreus), Wax Mallow, Sleeping Hibiscus, and Mazapan.

A CLOSE relative of the shoe-flower, the chilli-flower is botanically known as Malvaviscus penduliflorus.
Malvaviscus grows to a height of three metres and has dense dark green foliage.
Unlike the shoe-flower (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), the five-petalled flowers of Malvaviscus never open wide and remain attached to the plant.

It has made itself at home in Florida and is naturalized in many areas of central and south Florida.
This shrub is also know as the sleeping hibiscus, it has a cousin, Malvaviscus arboreus which has very similar flowers and very similar common names like sleepy mallow and Mexican Turk's cap.

The popularity as a garden flower can be traced from the Gulf of Mexico to Florida.
Although this species of Turk’s Cap is more compact in its growth and bears smaller flowers and foliage than Malvaviscus arboreus (Giant Turks Cap), it can on occasion become as impressive in size.
Turks cap can grow in alkaline or acidic soils and is well adapted to sun or partial shade.
