Examinations appeals board - Malvern Girls' College AQA 2002 GCE AS level Philosophy 5171   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The College asserted that the effect of the very narrow mark bands was exacerbated by the allowance of a marking tolerance of +/-3 marks and further exaggerated by the effect of UMS conversion.
The College had asked for statistical information about different cohorts and their performance at the AQA stage 2 appeal but had not received it after the AQA appeal or for the EAB appeal hearing.
While accepting AQA’s willingness to arrange for an examiner to visit the College once the appeal was closed, the panel considered that the teachers might have been better able to understand the marks awarded had they been given more information on the performance of their candidates during the AQA appeals process.
