The second electric tramway in Melbourne's suburbs was opened on the 11th October 1906 and ran from Flemington Bridge (near the terminus of the North Melbourne cable tram route) to Essendon, with a branch to Saltwater River (Now Maribyrnong River) and a short spur along Puckle St Moonee Ponds, to Moonee Ponds railway station.
The first tramway to operate in Melbourne was an isolated line from Fairfield railway station.
The lease of the cable trams by the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Co. expired on 30th June, 1916 and it was decided to appoint an interim Melbourne Tramways Trust to operate the system until it was decided what to do about the growing problems of street passenger transport in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

I like the section of track between broadmeadows and jacana station where the flyover for the standard gauge is. because when your driving down pascoe vale rd and see a freight or the xpt go over its almost as if there flying.
For me the best line would be one that has: a sense of history, waiting rooms and clean toilets (that are on every station and open), interesting views (industrial and environment) and construction (bridges, tunnels, cuttings), and trains that are comfortable, reliable, regular, and on time.
I've seen some pictures of the proposed new Flinders Street Station, in fact it was a book I was browsing through the other day, but I can't remember what it was.

 TMSV: Feeding & filling - the story of the PMTT
On 13 November 1913 the lines from Balaclava Junction (corner of Hawthorn and Balaclava Roads Caulfield) via Hawthorn and Glenhuntly Roads to Elsternwick railway station, and via Glenhuntly Road to Grange Road Glenhuntly, and via Balaclava and Waverley Roads to Darling Road East Malvern were opened.
Electricity was supplied by the Melbourne Electricity Supply Company from its Richmond power station, and was transmitted as 4000 V AC to the P&MTT substation at Malvern for conversion to 600 V DC.
An extension from Tooronga Road to near Glen Iris railway station was opened on 28 March 1914.
