Mam Tor is an Iron Age fort overlooking Castleton and Hope Valley, Derbyshire.
The views from the summit of Mam Tor are superb, with a fine view of Edale and Kinder to the north and Hope valley to the east, and a splendid ridge leading from the summit down to Hollins Cross and along to Lose Hill.

Until it was re-routed a couple of years ago, this road had the unique distinction of having 'a bit missing' from its western section at Mam Tor in the Peak District.
Approaching the Caverns, the road forks in two, which is also where the A-road status ends according to the map: left is Winnats Pass, right is Mam Tor.

Mam Tor is a prime site for hang gliding, and you will rarely come up here in the hours of daylight without seeing at least one gaily coloured canopy riding the thermals nearby.
Mam Tor lies at the western end of a delightful ridge route approaching three miles in length, falling to the col of Hollins Cross (where seven footpaths converge) and then rising again to the curious eminence of Black Tor and finally Lose Hill.
The 1696ft summit of Mam Tor is technically part of the Kinder massif, ultimately connected to it via a long horseshoe around the head of the Hope valley, it explains why the Tor fails to appear in any summit-baggers' list such as the Marylins.

Nearby Castleton was visited by Charlotte Brontë, and the region is thought to have inspired the countryside around Thornfield in Jane Eyre (I was amused to note the high frequency of the name Eyre upon the graves in the Edale churchyard).
Mam Tor and Kinder Scout are "peaks" (in reality scarcely higher than the surrounding land) on opposite sides of the valley in which Edale is located, and have quite different characters -- Mam Tor is green and rolling, while Kinder Scout is covered with rugged moorland.

We were introduced to another Mam Tor project: Worry Doll, a Tasmanian, psychological horror book that has taken its author three years to write and draw, because he has made every image photographically realistic using only pen and ink.
Now Mam Tor is toying with the idea of putting a PDF version of that first book out for a couple of dollars, with extra stuff in it, such as downloadable songs and pictures attached to it, podcasts, and things like that.

At its feet lies the crushed and splintered A625, which was once the main road between Stockport and Sheffield until Mam Tor shivered in 1974 and the road was closed.
People of the Iron Age probably noted its symbology, and made Mam Tor the protective military and commercial centre for the southernmost reaches of the tribe Brigantes.

There had been problems with Mam Tor for some years on and off, and the road had been closed, or had been single track, over this section on several occasions.
A major landslide in the late seventies proved to be the final straw for the long-suffering local roads authority, and it was decided to close the road permanently rather than repair it.
