Elliot was widely considered the most charismatic member of the Mamas and the Papas due to her sense of humor and optimism, in part because of her large size and weight.
While the Mamas and the Papas were touring as The Magic Circle (their name before changing it to The Mamas and the Papas), Elliot begged friend Denny Doherty to let her join the band.

Cass Elliot was born Ellen Naomi Cohen on September 19, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Cass Elliot began to work as a solo single in Washington, D.C. At this point Denny Doherty had joined John and Michelle Phillips and the three were performing as The New Journeymen.
Cass had one daughter Owen Vanessa in April 1967 and she was married twice, first (1963-68) to fellow Big Three and Mugwumps member Jim Hendricks and second to Baron Donald von Wiedenman (1971).

Cass changed her last name from Cohen to Elliot in '60 when she was trying to make it as a Broadway actress, the name Elliot came from a dead friend and was intended to be a tribute to him.
Cass was born to a middle-class Jewish family where music was ever-present: it's been said that she first developed a love of music by listening to the opera on the radio with her family.
With the strongest voice in the Mamas and the Papas, Cass sang lead on several of the group's hits, such as "Words of Love" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me." One interesting story has it that she was only taken in by the group after she banged her head on a pipe.
