Mamai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mamai (or Mamay) was a powerful military commander of Golden Horde in the 1370s, who resided in the western part of this nomadic state, which is now the Southern Ukrainian Steppes and the Crimean Peninsula.
Mamai, holding military rank of tumenbashy (tyomnik, тёмник in Russian — commander of 10,000 troops, loosely equivalent to a modern general) was not Chingiz Khan's descendant and thus ineligible for the Saray throne.
After being badly defeated by Russians at the Battle of Kulikovo (1380), Mamai was assassinated in Kaffa (Crimea) by the Genoese, who could not forgive the total waste of a military unit of Genoese crossbowmen who were slaughtered by the Russians.

Khan Mamai undertook this march to Russia having two ends in view: to consolidate his own authority in the Golden Horde and regain control of the Russian principalities, some of which tended to become indocile.
The Tatar, who belonged to Mamai's entourage, confirmed the reports that the armies of the Horde and its allies were on the march.
The rout of Mamai's army clearly showed that by united action the Russian principalities were able to free themselves completely from the dependence on the Golden Horde whose strength proved to be not equal to that of the Russian lands.

The meaning of the word “Mamai” cannot be adequately determined, evidently it carries something enigmatic, something that cannot be explicitly revealed.

While the Russian empire spends lavishly to finance the fraud overseas - the festival was co-sponsored by the Russian Ministry of Culture - back home in Ukraine, the last vestiges of Ukrainian film and television are being deliberately starved to death in a cultural Holodomor.
While Ukrainians in the United States reveled to see "Mamai" as Ukraine's first submission for the Academy Awards, back in Ukraine, it was a different story.
Theater owners would not even rent theaters for a guaranteed flat rate if the film to be shown was "Mamai." Having no possible outlet in Ukraine, "Mamai," which was submitted for the 2003 Academy Awards, is popular at international festivals, but few Ukrainians will ever see it.
