I like the Mamas and Papas because they had a great harmony but you could also hear the individual voices, and their voices (especially Cass's) were filled with such exuberance.

The proceedings were conducted largely by veteran record executive and Roxy owner Lou Adler, who gave the Mamas and the Papas their first contract in 1965 and produced their records, and by original Mamas and Papas singer Denny Doherty.
The Beach Boys, however, were represented by Bruce Johnston, and Mike Love, who told the audience, "Nobody loved the Mamas and the Papas more than the Beach Boys." They sang "Kokomo," their 1988 hit that was written by Phillips, McKenzie, Love and Terry Melcher, who jumped in gamely on the unrehearsed rendition of the song.
McKenzie joined in on several Mamas and Papas tunes and took the spotlight to sing his biggest hit, "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)," another John Phillips composition.

 The Mamas and Papas
The Mamas and the Papas were a crucial part of the harmony-rich pop-group movement that swept Southern California in the Sixties.
With their mix of male (John Phillips, Denny Doherty) and female (Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips) voices, astute songwriting and arrangements from Phillips and musical contributions from some of Los Angeles' finest session musicians, the Mamas and the Papas cut some of the most indelible and durable records of the sixties.
Along with writing much of the Mamas and Papas' material, John Phillips also wrote a song that would be remembered as a sort of theme song of the flower power era in California.

Their music, built around radiant harmonies and a solid electric folk foundation, was gorgeous on its own terms, but a major part of its appeal lay in the easygoing southern California lifestyle it endorsed.

From The Big Three, through the Mugwumps, and The Mamas and the Papas, to her solo recordings and collaboration with Dave Mason; Cass presented one of the great voices in music and is still an inspiration as a singer and as a human being today.
The latter song, attributed to 'Mama Cass' on the single rather than the group, became the hit that launched Cass' solo career having had enough of the volatile personal relationships and substance problems of the other three Mamas and Papas members.
The 1973 special 'Dont Call Me Mama' had to be delayed while she recovered from an operation to repair the knee she had injured, she had to appear with a cane for her performances at Mister Kelly's in Chicago.

Cass Elliott Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A part of the Folk movement in Greenwich, she was a member of groups such as the Big Three and the Mugwumps (the latter of which contained soon-to-be "Papa" Denny Doherty and John Sebastian, Zal Yanovsky, and Jimmy Hendricks, who would go and form the Lovin' Spoonful).
Here she was finally let into the group; a popular but untrue story as to why was because she was hit in the head by copper tubing, which somehow miraculously caused her voice to change so that it blended better with Michelle's.
Cass was often considered to be one of the most charismatic members of the group and charmed fans with her sense of humor as well as her amazing voice.

RollingStone.com: The Mamas & The Papas : Papa John Phillips Dies : News
Phillips is best known as the Mamas and the Papas' chief songwriter and vocal arranger, having arranged and written or co-written several Top Ten hits during the group's short lifetime, including "California Dreamin'," "Monday, Monday," "I Saw Her Again Last Night," "Creeque Alley" and "12:30 (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)."
True to Phillips' organizational, leadership and diplomatic genius, he and Adler were able to pacify both the staid residents of Monterey as well as the hippies.
In a sense, this was an extension of what he did with the Mamas and the Papas, a band that was not only embraced and appreciated by young people and proto-hippies, but by their parents as well.
