Topic: Mambo (dance)

  Mambo Dance History
The "Mambo" dance is attributed to Perez Prado who introduced it at La Tropicana night-club in Havana in 1943.
A modified version of the "Mambo" (the original dance had to be toned down due to the violent acrobatics) was presented to the public at dance studios, resort hotels, and at night-clubs in New York and Miami.
One of the greatest contributions of the Mambo is that it led to the development of the Cha-Cha.

 The mambo dance
The mambo was especially popular in New York dance halls, where dancers twisted and turned and threw their partners, arms, legs and hands in the air to win dance competitions.
Mambo is characterized by the hip movements that it entails.
Public dance halls often have a raving mambo scene, meaning that dancers are moving closely in a crowded area, stepping on each other and executing moves that occasionally put another dancer at risk.

 Our Dance & Music
Technically, it is proper to start the dance in the following way: You walk onto the dance floor with your partner, set up the standard partner position frame, and then begin on the 6th beat of the measure, with the man stepping forward with his left foot and the woman stepping back with her right.
Because when you are dancing to a great song with your partner, doing cross body leads, complicated turns, shines, and interacting with your partner and moving to the phrasing of the music, there is no time to be thinking about what beat and what foot you should be on.
One can dance in many ways, and in connection with many different aspects of the music: rhythm, melody, mood, meaning of the words, tempo, harmony, intensity, etc. What matters most is what each dancer prefers.....and that they don't smash into their neighbors on the dance floor.
