  Mamelodi, Gauteng - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mamelodi, part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, is a fl township set up by the then apartheid government northeast of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa.
It was established when 16 houses were built on the farm Vlakfontein in June 1953 and later the name changed to Mamelodi, the name given to president Paul Kruger by the Africans because of his ability to whistle and imitate birds, also meaning Mother of Melodies.
The township is home to the Mamelodi Sundowns of the Castle Premiership and the Mamelodi Bees of the South African Women's Basketball League.

Pretoria - Charges of rape and robbery were added on Monday to the three counts of murder faced by two men in the regional court accused of the killings of three girls from Mamelodi, eastern Pretoria.
Police said the presence of a white substance found oozing from the girls' mouths may be an indication they were poisoned.
Tsholofelo Aphane, 19, Lerato Precious Dinisa, 18, and Lindiwe Mbonani, 19 all from Section R of Mamelodi were buried on Saturday after memorial services were held at their schools.

Pretoria - The case against two men for the rape and murder of three Mamelodi girls was postponed in Pretoria regional court on Monday.
Tsholofelo Aphane, 19, Lerato Precious Dinisa, 18, and Lindiwe Mbonani, 19 - all from Section R of Mamelodi - were buried last week after memorial services were held at their schools.
At the men's last appearance, one of the accused told the court he feared being killed by the community.

Two shack settlements in Mamelodi East, one serviced and one unserviced, formed the South African case study.
A policy recommendation arising from the study is that any official attempt to control HBEs in low-income neighbourhoods on grounds of environmental improvement, should take into account that the negligible negative impacts are outweighed by the potential economic benefits of HBE activity for the individual household.
