  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Mamertus
The fact that his brother, Claudianus Mamertus, the theological writer, received in his youth a sound training in rhetoric, and enjoyed the personal acquaintance of Bishop Eucherius of Lyons (434-50), suggests that the brothers belonged to a wealthy Gallic family from the neighbourhood of Lyons.
In 463 Mamertus was engaged in a dispute with Pope Hilarius on the question of the privileges of the Bishop of Arles.
Mamertus was the founder of the Rogation Processions (see ROGATION DAYS), as we learn on the testimony of Sidonius Apollinaris (Epist., V, xiv; VII, i), and his second successor, Avitus ("Homilia de Rogat." in P. In connexion with these intercessory processions, Mamertus summoned a synod at Vienne between 471 and 475.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Claudianus Mamertus
He assisted his brother in the discharge of his functions, and Sidonius Apollinaris describes him as directing the psalm-singing of the chanters, who were formed into groups and chanted alternate verses, whilst the bishop was at the altar celebrating the sacred mysteries.
In the same epigram, which constitutes the epitaph of Claudianus Mamertus, Sidonius also informs us that this distinguished scholar composed a lectionary, that is, a collection of readings from Sacred Scripture to be made on the occasion of certain celebrations during the year.
Two facts assign Claudianus Mamertus a place in the history of thought: he took part in the reaction against Semipelagianism, which took place in Gaul towards the close of the fifth century and he was the precursor of Scholasticism, forestalling the system of Roscellinus and Abelard.

Postgraduate Conference Ancient Classics, Proceedings 1999: Bardsley
The significance of the feast of the Ascension for Christians would have been reinforced in the minds of those relatively newly-converted orthodox Gaulish Christians who lived according to the rhythms of the seasons.
Furthermore, due to the threat from various heresies, the apparent success of Mamertus' Minor Rogation Days ceremonies in quelling the various disasters which visited Vienne may have served to illustrate the approval given by God to those who followed Rome-sanctioned doctrine.
Mamertus, aware of the respect held in the Romanised areas of Gaul for ancient Roman traditions seized upon the opportunity to harmonise the rhythms of an essentially agricultural community with those of the newer community of Christians.

Mamertus of Vienne was responsible for the litanies and processions that once marked the Rogation days of spring, the three days before Ascension Day when solemn intercession was made for God's blessing on the crops and other fruit of the earth.
During this period of catastrophe, Mamertus spent his days prostrate before the altar beseeching God to help his stricken people and tirelessly visiting his flock to comfort them in their distress.
As a result of his prolonged vigils, he conceived the idea of an annual procession and litany, called a Rogation, to take place every spring, in which the whole community would together intercede with God to have mercy on His people and to bless their crops throughout the year.

Mamertus, bishop of Vienna in Gaul, on occasion of several dreadful calamities, which about the year 460 fell on the people of that diocese, instituted solemn litanies, or rogations, on the three days immediately preceding the feast of Ascension
The rogation days of Mamertus were before long received throughout Gaul; and they were also received in the English church at an early period, as the council of Cloveshoe appointed that these three days should be kept holy, after the manner of former times
In the next century after that in which Mamertus lived, another annual litany or rogation was established in the diocese of Auvergne, or Clermont, by Gallus, A.D. 545, who, on occasion of a plague in the city, directed an annual procession from Clermont, to the church of St. Julian the Martyr

In 463 Mamertus of Vienne had consecrated a Bishop of Die, although this Church, by a decree of Leo I, belonged to the metropolitan Diocese of Arles.
The synod took place and, on the strength of the report given him by Bishop Antonius, he issued an edict dated 25 February, 464, in which Bishop Veranus was commissioned to warn Mamertus that, if in the future he did not refrain from irregular ordinations, his faculties would be withdrawn.
Consequently the consecration of the Bishop of Die must be sanctioned by Leontius of Arles.
