The area being considered is the Río Mameyes, from the Forest boundary ½ mile west of the Road 988 bridge (Puente Roto) to its headwaters in the Baño de Oro Research National Area.
The portion of the Mameyes, from its headwaters to the confluence with the Río de la Mina, is remote and isolated.
The Mameyes River is the only river in the Island that runs un-interrupted from its origin to the sea.

In 1914, the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico approved a law by which the municipality of Luquillo was reorganized again, with the same wards it had in 1897 with the exception of the Hato Viejo ward that disappeared in 1910 and the Mameyes II ward that became part of Río Grande.
Luquillo has the follwing rivers: the Mameyes which divides it from Río Grande; the Savannah and its affluents Pitahaya, Cristal and Camándulas; the Juan Martín, which has as tributaries several gorges; and by the Mata de Plátano gorge.
The Mameyes river is born in the Grande River.

Description: A contingent valuation in-person survey of Puerto Rican households was performed from April to August 1995 to estimate their willingness-to-pay for preserving instream flows in the Río Mameyes and avoiding a dam on the Río Fajardo.
Visitors to the Río Mameyes indicated they would reduce trips by 93 percent if 10 million gallons daily were withdrawn from the river, resulting in a loss of $250,000 in annual recreation benefits.

A 4.5 mile length of the Mameyes extending from its headwaters will be classified as a wild river for 2.1 miles, a scenic river for 1.4 miles, and a recreational river for a final mile.
The 2.1 mile length of the de La Mina from its headwaters to the Mameyes will be a recreational river for.9 miles from its headwaters to La Mina Falls and a scenic river for 1.2 miles until it joins the Mameyes.
