Topic: Mamlambo

  Cryptozoology - Glossary
In the tribal mythology of South Africa's Xhosa people, the mamlambo is a giant river snake which brings good fortune to he who owns it, and is used by witch doctors to get revenge on their enemies.
The tribal stories describe mamlambo as a big snake with a large bulky head, while modern sightings describe it as being "half horse and half fish", having the head and neck of a horse and the body of a fish, with four short stumpy legs.
The second theory is that mamlambo is some kind of very primitive archaeocete, occupying a place in cetacean evolution before the legs turned into flippers and the neck disappeared, but after the typical cetacean tail had evolved -- which would explain the horse-like head, the short legs and the "fish-like" body.

The Mamlambo is a beast of Xhosa and Zulu tribal mythology which is said to be the goddess of rivers and, if caught, provides great wealth.
Mamlambo's common name is the 'Brain Sucker' due to the way it eats its victim's faces off and sucks out their brains.
The Mamlambo's appearance was last mentioned by South African legislature in 1997, as a result of a village outcry following the deaths of nine people in the Mzintlava River.

 AMERICAN MONSTERS
The Xhosa claim that any warrior brave enough - or foolish enough for that matter - to go toe to toe with one of these monstrous beasts and survive, would be the recipient of a tremendous amount of wealth, not to mention their fair share of prestige.
Once its prey has perished the Mamlambo reportedly cracks open the skull of its quarry and proceeds to siphon the brains and, ultimately, all of blood from the corpse, hence its graphic nickname.
Despite police's dismissal of native accounts, the villagers who reside near the ominous river claim that they are not merely superstitious tribesmen, who are grasping at legends to explain away natural occurrences, but educated people who are being terrorized by this savage predator.

At Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape, 540km by road south of Durban, and in coastal regions throughout the former Transkei homeland, local Xhosa folklore also made the sea a dangerous place.
Traditional Xhosa still believe that "Mamlambo" (akin to mermaids and mermen) live in the sea and waterways, and when someone drowns it is because they have been taken away by one of these water spirits.
The belief in mamlambo was reinforced by the fact that the treacherous surf of the Indian Ocean ensured that when somebody drowned, the body was rarely washed back to shore or recovered.

In contrast, South African scholar Nokwenza Plaatje states that her "interest in African mythology and existing orality lies in how it can be (re)deployed as a critical and heuristic modality for engaging contemporary social problematics." She sees the mamlambo myth (the South African version of mermaid), like all mythology in general, as an interpretive model.
In the language of the living tradition among the indigenous people, she continues, mamlambo is represented in a patriarchal notion, a reflection of the Christian missionary and colonial discourse.
Thus, in the most popular view mamlambo is an evil and manipulative seductress, and can only be invoked through witchcraft.
