  Canine Mammary Carcinoma
The development of mammary gland neoplasms appears to be hormone-dependent because the risk of developing a mammary tumor increases as the number of estrous (heat) cycles increases.
Mammary glands 1, 2 and 3 drain to the axillary lymph nodes, while glands 4 and 5 drain to the inguinal lymph nodes.

Breast Cancer Research | Full text | First description of feline inflammatory mammary carcinoma: clinicopathological ...
Inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IMC) is a special type of locally advanced mammary cancer that is associated with particularly aggressive behaviour and poor prognosis in women (in which case it is termed 'inflammatory breast carcinoma' [IBC]) [1-3] and in the dog (in which case it is termed IMC) [4,5].
The percentage of malignant mammary tumours is higher in the cat (86%) than in the dog (42%) [17], and the histology of feline mammary tumours is closer to that in human breast cancer [18].
In one study on feline mammary tumours, the authors used the term 'inflammatory mammary carcinomas' to include all tumours with any histological lymphatic invasion (not only dermal invasion), which is not the diagnostic criterion for this type of tumour, and data concerning the clinical features were not provided [20].

THE PRINCIPAL QUESTIONS CONCERNS THE TUMOR OF THE BREAST
In a woman with familiarity for mammary carcinoma (presence of two relatives of first degree with history of mammary neoplasia) the mammographic controls have to begin at 35 years of age and have to be continued with annual recurrence.
The removal of all the mammary gland, with the portion of surrounding skin, including the areola and the nipple (total mastectomy), has to be performed when mammary carcinoma overcomes the dimensions of 3 centimetres or when tumors even more little involve directly the skin or the thoracic wall.
In young patients submitted to chemotherapy for mammary carcinoma the disappearance of the menstrual cycles (amenorrhoea) is reversible, therefore after some months the women return to have regular menstruations, being able to conceive a child.

Dr. Sorenmo: Mammary carcinoma is a type of cancer that arises from the glandular tissue in the mammary gland.
Dr. Sorenmo: Mammary gland tumors are the most common cancers in intact female dogs and as such they represent a significant health problem for dogs that live in countries where spaying is not routinely performed at an early age.
In addition to evaluating whether hormonal therapy prolongs survival in dogs with mammary carcinomas, we are also evaluating hormonal and other molecular factors that may be associated with response to or resistance to this type of treatment.

Since mammary tumors seem to enlarge under the influence of the reproductive hormones it is best to spay a bitch at the time of mammary tumor removal.
In dogs, mammary cancer is usually benign and the current "standard" recommendation is to remove the lump and any visibly affected tissue in the region of the lump.
Mammary tumors are a lot easier to remove when they are small and they will sometimes grow rather rapidly.

Somatic mutations in CDH1 occur in lobular breast carcinomas with a frequency ranging from 10–56% (15–20% of invasive lobular carcinomas) and are rare in ductal carcinomas [17,18].

We applied neuron specific enolase and chromogranin-A immunostaining to the formalin fixed, paraffin embedded sections of 58 mastectomy materials diagnosed as infiltrating ductal carcinoma (24), infiltrating lobular carcinoma (15), mucinous carcinoma (8), mixed mammary carcinoma (4), cribriform carcinoma (3), atypical medullary carcinoma (2), papillary carcinoma (1) and carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation (1).
As up to 60% positivity was detected with these markers in mammary carcinomas, it may be worth to compare positive and negative marker results for the effect on follow-up and the outcome after chemotherapy for definition of its prognostic importance.

A concept of a “collision” (coexisting) of neoplastic lesion of mammary PD and underlying carcinoma is therefore presented.
The death rate of metastatic breast carcinoma in patients with mammary PD and underlying cancer is 61.3%, with a 10-year cumulative survival rate of 33%.
Of patients with mammary PD (without clinical or mammographic evidence of breast tumor) who were treated with radiation therapy alone or excision plus radiation, 3 of 20 patients developed recurrent disease in the nipple-areola at a mean follow-up of 7.5 years.
