Man bites dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The phrase Man bites dog and the related phrase Dog bites man are used to describe a phenomenon in journalism.
Most news that is reported is done so due to some unusual aspect: if a situation is completely normal or a system is working as expected then it is not deemed newsworthy.
The result is that one rarely sees a news item titled "Dog bites man", but one may see a news item titled "Man bites dog" more often, even though the former happens much more readily.

I remember first watching 'Man Bites Dog' about ten years ago when it was lumped in with 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer' by some British journalists under the tag "the new brutalism".
Granted 'Reservoir Dogs' has several humourous moments but 'Man Bites Dog' is let's face it, a comedy.
And 'Henry', like 'Man Bites Dog', is also a story about a serial killer, but the approaches of the two movies couldn't be more different.

Man Bites Dog is a pseudo-documentary that follows the killing sprees of the murderous Benoit (Benoit Poelvoorde).
However, Man Bites Dog is a full-length feature and, as such, spends a little too much time with its subject.
Nevertheless, if you do venture to see Man Bites Dog, you would have to be made out of stone to miss the visceral, sardonic impact of a highly-unusual film.

Filmed entirely in the style of a fl and white documentary, "Man Bites Dog" is an often outrageous excursion into the underground world of a sadistic thug named Benoit, a travelogue of the daily activities and random thoughts of a bloodthirsty sociopath.
Best of all, "Man Bites Dog" charts the rampaging wild rumpus of a whacked-out Belgian killer through the streets, attics, dive bars and country lanes by means of a documentary film crew---complete with narrator, camera-man, and two sound guys!---who follow and film Benoit's every brutal move.
One more try: Man Bites Dog is a satire only of itself (that's a good start), its satire is aimed at itself, while it portrays a documentary, which could be viewed as satirical (perhaps of itself).

She says "Snow Dogs" glorifies the Iditarod and racing, and consequently endorses the relationship between people and dogs in the sport.
Jason Nickle, who raises sled dogs, organizes tours and competes in sprint races on the International Sled Dog Racing Association Circuit, says such occurrences are anomalous and that Iditarod sled dogs are generally some of the most well taken care of animals in the world.
While the current campaign against "Snow Dogs" might not have a huge impact on the film's box office take, the activists think that one dividend of their efforts is a better educated public.

The Korean practice of eating dog meat is said to have originated in the Stone Age, when (as in Manchuria) dog meat was a staple during the cold winter months.
As Korea developed into an agricultural country, dogs continued to be regarded more as barnyard animals than pets -- and since dogs were much less useful in the rice fields than oxen, they were ultimately regarded as a handy source of meat.
And using dog meat stew as an aphrodisiac is generally considered a 20th-century fad.

dOc DVD Review: Man Bites Dog (1992)
Man Bites Dog is kind of an unholy union between The Silence of the Lambs and This Is Spinal Tap: a documentary film crew follows around their subject, who just happens to be a serial killer, named Benoit.
Of course Benoit is a monster, but he's also a self-styled aesthete—he's happy to garrote someone at random on a train, for sport, and think nothing of it, but he saves his true outrage for the poorly designed and shoddily constructed low-income housing in which he finds many of his victims.
If you were looking for the antithesis of family fare, this might be it, but if you can stomach it, Man Bites Dog is a sick, funny and dangerously smart movie.

Possibly the strangest by-product of the serial killer movie fad during the 1990s, Man Bites Dog (originally C'est arrivé près de chez vous, or It Happened in Your Neighborhood) straddles the art film and exploitation line by passing itself off as a humorous social commentary, albeit packed with brutality stronger than a Lucio Fulci film.
Eventually an encounter with one of Ben's competitors in the killing and thieving department goes badly, incidcating the raconteur/murderer may not be as infallible as he believes.
Holding a series of fractured mirrors up to a world view that condescendingly celebrates the tortured and the damned, the film holds up even better now that real life exploitation has passed from the realm of screeching talk shows into the even more disturbing waters of reality television.

“If a dog bites a man,” editors used to instruct cub reporters, “that’s an ordinary occurrence.
But when a man bites a dog, that’s news.” The advice and the saying man bites dog can be traced back to Oliver Goldsmith’s poem “Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog,” about a dog that “went mad and bit a man,“ which concludes with the lines:
According to Eric Partridge, this touching poem passed into folklore in a number of versions, possibly including a funny one where a man did bite a dog, and finally became the journalistic advice.
