There's a moment of crisis towards the end: his mum and son are being denied entry (the latter because he's apparently a deaf mute, yet dad insists he's just stubborn).
A little kid lumped him together, a mob of kids, blind orphans who never laid eyes on a man. They clumped the dough of his arms and legs to the dough of his body, then jammed his head down on top.
The film opens with a scruffy hitchhiker, it is unclear at first whether it is a man or a woman, bursting into a cafe and making her way (yes, it is a woman, Vivienne, Linda's daughter) to a table, at which Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman) is trying to read.

Man Overboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Man Overboard is a term generally related to situations where a person has fallen off a boat or ship, and the need exists to rescue that person.
There are many causes: the person might have been struck by a spar of the ship (boom, spinnaker pole, davit), or might have lost his/her footing due to a slippery deck or the unexpected movement of the boat.

Todd & Whall: "Man overboard", 1919.
If a man goes over in a heavy gale, and it is not too bad to lower a boat, make a lee for her and oil the water.
A good way to manage a drowning man is to get round to the back of him, and clutch him by the arm, close up to the shoulder; you will thus be able to keep him up, and he will be unable to size hold of you with either hand.
The writer tried this with a heavy man, and found it to succeed admirably, and he was able to save him, though unable to reach a life-buoy, and having to wait what seemed a terribly long time for the boat to come up.

The SF emphasizes the strict following of a set procedure, feeling that, in an overboard situation (even in a test with a live victim), there is a lot of adrenaline running, and that the assurance afforded by abiding by a set ritual strongly acts to prevent unfortunate decision-making under pressure.
The Navy people soon demonstrated to their satisfaction that with their crews it is possible, once the victim is alongside, for four or five men simply to grab the victim and hoist him aboard, a method that seems applicable to full racing crews generally.
It was found to be advisable for the light on the person overboard to be attached as high up as feasible; though the lights were found to show reasonably well when under water.

Many people have been lost overboard and successfully rescued, but there have been several people lost overboard who have never been recovered, or who had drowned by the time that they were recovered.
The best way to successfully recover a Man Overboard (MOB) is to never have the person become separated from the boat in the first place.
Many boats have a MOM (Man Overboard Module) canister on the transom; if you pull the pin, flotation gear and a marker will be released into the water for the victim.

 Alston: "Man overboard", 1860.
The cry of "man overboard!" in the most perfectly disciplined ship, is sure to be attended with some confusion at first, which becomes "worse confounded" when followed by the pipe of "hands about ship!" repeated and spun out by half a dozen boatswains'-mates.
It may be urged, that by going round, the ship is placed to windward of the man before the boat is lowered, and, therefore, she will reach him quicker than she would were the ship hove to on the original tack.
Boat's gripes, instead of being secured to an eye-bolt in the chains, should be set up to a strop with a thimble in it, passed through the eye-bolt, and retained there by a slip-toggle with a lanyard attached; which has therefore merely to be hauled upon to free the boat.

 Luce: "Man overboard", 1863.
There are cases in which an officer may have reason to hesitate as to the propriety of lowering a boat to rescue a man, such as in a gale of wind with a heavy sea, or in a dark, squally night.
The most important considerations, when a man falls overboard, are: First, the quickest and most effectual method of arresting the ship's progress, and how to keep her as near the spot where the man fell as possible.
Various opinions prevail among officers as to the first point; but, I* think, the best authorities recommend that, if possible, the ship should not merely be hove aback when a man falls overboard, but that she ought to be brought completely round on the other tack.
