Air power can either paralyze the enemy's military action or compel him to devote to the defense of his bases and communications a share of his straitened resources far greater that what we need in the attack.
Riding through the air on silver wings instead of sailing the seas with white wings, he must steer his own course, for the air is uncharted, and he must therefore explore for himself the strange eddies and currents of the ever-changing sky in its many moods.
In the air a machine ceases indeed to be a mere piece of mechanism; it becomes animate and is capable not only of primary guidance and control, but actually of expressing a pilot's temperament.

 MAN PORTABLE SURFACE-AIR MISSILES
It is hardly therefore necessary to elaborate upon the potential of the modern man portable SAM in the hands of a competent terrorist cleverly positioned within a couple of miles of a major airport.
The man portable SAM has forced major changes in thinking by those confronted with it, those yet to be confronted still allow themselves the luxury of flying helos and tactical transports without exhaust infrared(IR) suppressors, IR jammers and chaff/flare dispensers the latter tied into IR warning systems and Radar Warning Receivers(RWR).
The man portable SAM was first fired in anger in 1971 over the Suez Canal, when an SA-7 embedded itself in the tail of an Israeli jet and failed to explode.

The time lapse between Collins' witnessing the incident and his writing the song varies: he wrote the song right away, he waited several years, or he wrote the song many years later (because he was a child when the incident took place).
The nature of the tragic incident also varies: it is most often a man standing idly by while someone else drowns (or nearly drowns), but other forms mention a deliberate drowning (i.e., murder), a rape (of Collins' wife), and Collins' catching his wife in an adulterous act.
At the subsequent concert, Collins premieres "In the Air Tonight," which he sings while a spotlight shines on the invited guest (or while he stares at the man, without the spotlight).

PM - Perth man jailed for "air rage"
The 31-year-old Perth man has been sentenced to at least one year in gaol for threatening to open the plane's door during a flight last year.
Along with threatening to open the door of the plane, he abused the air crew, refused to put his seat belt on during turbulence, and opened overhead lockers while the aircraft was landing.
The cabin crew and the flight crew are trained on how to deal with people who break rules or break the law during flight but naturally if they get out of hand sometimes planes have been forced to divert and get the police on the ground to deal with the offender.

Kurt Elling Man In The Air
It's all there on Man in the Year -- Kurt's soaring voice, profound lyrics, clever Laurence Hobgood arrangements and pleasantly diverse material.
Since this is the first US release of Elling's "Resolution", it should certainly open some eyes, although if you like this version you should try to track down the more intense but less "clean" Live version of this song on Live from Chicago: The Out Takes (Australian Blue Note release).
It takes the contemporary, modern, innovative sounds of The Messenger (my favorite kurt album, next to this one) with the true spontaneous jazz vibe of his Live in Chicago album with the Honey Sweet vocals of "flirting with twilight" and puts them together to make Man in the Air.

As such, these leaders hold that when minorities enter the military, they may be fighting to keep empowered a group that does not act in their best interests.

On his new Blue Note record, Man In The Air, vocalist Kurt Elling walks this tightrope admirably, sometimes astonishingly.
This is all the more impressive considering that Elling has not simply recorded songs by John Coltrane, Pat Metheny, Joe Zawinul, and Herbie Hancock in new arrangements, but has written his own lyrics into these previously instrumental works.
"Man In The Air" is a highlight, marrying pianist Laurence Hobgood's beguiling tune, with its shifting tempos and moods, to a lyric which apparently refers to Wayne Shorter, whose influence is felt throughout the album.

MAN IN THE AIR was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
One of the most distinctive, forward-looking vocalists in contemporary jazz, Kurt Elling is clearly inspired by the likes of Jon Hendricks and Mark Murphy, but assimilates those influences into a strikingly unique style.
Though he's done his share of standards as well as albums of original material, Elling strikes an interesting balance on MAN IN THE AIR by writing his own lyrics based around pre-existing jazz tunes (a technique pioneered by Hendricks).

Militaries funded several aircraft developers, especially in the late 19th century, but failed demonstrations caused great skepticism by the time the Wright brothers were able to fly predictably.
