The “Man in the Moon” illusion, familiar to various cultures around the world, was created by powerful asteroid impacts that rocked the satellite billions of years ago, a new study suggests.

Man on the Moon Movie Review by Anthony Leong
These are the questions posed by "Man on the Moon" (named after the R.E.M. song), an Andy Kaufman biopic that brings together director Milos Forman ("The People vs. Larry Flynt") and comedian Jim Carrey ("The Truman Show").
In its two hour running time, "Man on the Moon" delves into the mystery of the Andy Kaufman, and tries to make sense of his life and why he did the crazy things that earned him both applause and notoriety.
Of course, much of the success for "Man on the Moon" can be attributed to Carrey, who seems to have put aside the rubber-faced antics of his early days and become a true dramatic actor.

That age puts the Moon's first solid rocks at about the same age Earth's first crust — bolstering the popular idea that both bodies formed crusts at about the same time and in the wake of a mega collision of a Mars-sized body with early Earth.
The reason it's taken so long to figure out the Moon's age is that there aren't many elements available in moon rocks to serve as timekeepers from the time the rocks solidified.
The new Moon dating method is actually a new twist on a previous attempt to determine the age of moon rocks by some of Kleine's colleagues by measuring their tungsten content.

Since the Apollo missions to the Moon, astronomers have become accustomed to seeing what their theory calls for.
The issue was decided in favor of the impact theory shortly after the beginning of the space age, when astronauts walked on the moon, and Apollo mission close-up images of craters excluded the volcanic interpretation.
In their interpretation of craters, therefore, planetary scientists appear to have fallen victim to a modern myth, another “man in the moon” in which imagination and theoretical license lead the way, in disregard for the proper bounds of good science.

Man on the Moon (1999): Jim Carrey, Courtney Love, Paul Giametti, Danny DeVito - PopMatters Film Review
But as the closing credits for Man on the Moon roll under Andy Kaufman's (Jim Carrey's) timid gaze, it's easy to think the film has been seduced by its own notion that a life of sufficient celebrity can offer freedom from the mortality that afflicts ordinary souls.
It's hard to know — from this film, anyway — whether his lack of impulse control is due to a narcissism that makes him forget about his audience, or an obsession with stirring something hidden by confronting his audience with the irrational.
But by the time Man on the Moon ends, it has asked whether those who live their lives breaking all society's rules can outmaneuver the most unshakable law, that of death's inevitability.

Schizophrenia Can Be Fun: 'Man on the Moon' Movie Review (NY Rock)
The bio-pic on the late comedian Andy Kaufman is saddled with the unenviable task of trying to explain the life of a man who wouldn't explain himself.
The movie Man on the Moon opens with Andy as a child playing in his room, just as we all did, except that Andy performs his own TV show in front of a wall, convinced there is a camera secretly hidden behind it.
Man on the Moon definitely opts to be a crowd pleaser, and though Andy would've done it differently, I'm sure he is as amazed as anyone that such a touching and moving portrait of his life was created on film.

Ancient Impacts Created Man In The Moon
The "Man in the Moon" is a collection of dark plains on the Earth-facing side of the Moon, where magma from the mantle flowed out onto the surface and flooded lunar craters.
The researchers said they expected to see defects beneath the Moon's crust that corresponded to craters on the surface, because old impacts would have left marks down to the mantle, the thick rocky layer between the Moon's tiny metallic core and its thin outer crust.
Potts said a cross-sectional image of the Moon created using the Clementine data shows that the crust on the far side looks as though it was depressed and then recoiled from a giant impact.
