Topic: Man in the Shadow

Jung Society of Atlanta - Shadow
Jung grew up in the shadow of his Swiss Reform pastor father, who held the same world-view, the conviction that "God's in his Heaven and all's right with the world." Except that it wasn't, and deep in his heart Pastor Jung knew it and young Carl did too.
He states that the shadow is one of the three archetypes which has "the most frequent and the most disturbing influence on the ego." (The others are the anima and animus.) It consists of the inferior and "primitive" aspects of the psyche -- those traits which we regard as undesirable, "bad," or sinful.
While the shadow is "the most accessible" of the three archetypes and therefore "the easiest to experience," it is "a moral problem that challenges the whole personality." Coming to terms with it requires "considerable moral effort" because we do not want to admit that we ourselves possess the dark qualities we despise.

Aside from these minor touches, however, "Man in the Shadow" is a traditional, straightforward effort which would have once fitted unobtrusively into the bottom half of a double-bill.
By 1957, however, these "B" movies were rapidly being replaced by TV programming and "Man in the Shadow" could easily have been converted into a one-hour television drama.
The script might have been edited down by eliminating the role of Orson Welles' teenage daughter who only figures tangentially into the plot and who does not provide any "romantic interest" for Jeff Chandler since his character is already happily married.

This learned man from the cold regions was young as well as clever; but it seemed to him as if he were sitting in an oven, and he became quite exhausted and weak, and grew so thin that his shadow shrivelled up, and became much smaller than it had been at home.
The shadow always knew when to take the place of honor, but the learned man took no notice of it, for he had a good heart, and was exceedingly mild and friendly.
So she walked up to the learned man, who stood in the doorway, and spoke to him of the sun, and the moon, of the green forests, and of people near home and far off; and the learned man conversed with her pleasantly and sensibly.

Man in the Shadow (1957) review by the Jackass Critics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Man in the Shadow is part Western, part crime flick that takes place in small-town Spurline (seemingly a Texas hamlet).
Once Renchler learns of that a murder did indeed occur on his ranch, he uses his influence to try to turn the blame onto the frail man who blew the whistle.
But in the end, Man in the Shadow isn’t catchy enough to be good noir and there isn’t enough action for it to be a good Western.
