The Man versus Horse Marathon is an annual marathon, with human and (mounted) equine contestants, which takes place in the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells.
This was not the first time that man had challenged a horse - in the 18th century, a man named Guto Nyth-Brân is reported to have raced a horse in the former Welsh county of Cardiganshire and won.
It was the first time that a man racing on foot has won the race, thereby winning the prize fund of £ 25,000 (which had been growing by £1,000 each year from the race's inception until claimed by a winning runner).

The fact that a man outran a horse over a distance much greater than a few miles is pretty freakin' incredible.
But a slightly better than average man can outrun an average horse over a short distance because the average horse isn't one that does nothing but run all day every day, like a racehorse does.
There are hundred mile races for humans, in which I doubt a horse could compete (obviously such a race, or for that matter 1/10 of one, would kill me).

Another possibility described in a new paper by Bramble and Lieberman is that our posture is an adaptation for high-performance endurance running, and that really we're a species of lopers, joggers, and marathon runners.
Seems to me the only way for hominids to successfully scavenge carcasses would be to approach en masse, tossing rocks or waving torches or whatever, and actually run the predator off.
That doesn't mean marathoner adaptations wouldn't be useful for getting to the kill in the first place, though--the faster you get there, the more meat's left--and that's what Bramble and Lieberman suggest in the Nature article.
