Manawatu is a region in the North Island of New Zealand.
The Manawatu Gorge (in Maori Te Apiti, meaning 'The Narrow Passage') runs between the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges of the North Island of New Zealand, linking the Manawatu and Hawke's Bay regions.
The road through the Manawatu Gorge was completed in 1872, and acts as the primary link between the two sides of the lower North Island.

In colonial days the western or seaward side of the Manawatu consisted of a broad coastal zone of sand dunes and swamps, originally covered with scrub and coarse grass on the dunes, and mainly flax and raupo in the swamps.
The land of the Manawatu itself was crossed by several rivers barely navigable by a vessel larger than a canoe or a whaleboat.
As the forest was cleared the land sown in grass and during the 1880's Palmerston North became the commercial centre of a developing and prosperous farming district.

At 3pm on 11 April 1895 a group of Palmerston North citizens met at the residence of Mr L.A.Abraham.
Numerous similar meetings were held up and down the length of New Zealand in the 1880’s and 90’s and with a desire to get golf started as soon as possible, unfortunately, for one reason or another most of the original sites chosen for play proved to be unsuitable.
However, the founders of the Manawatu Golf Club were more fortunate in choosing Hokowhitu as the site for their club.

The Manawatu River is a major river of the southern North Island of New Zealand.
The Manawatu's total length is 180 km, making it only the 12th-longest in the country, but at 102 m³/s it is one of the country's greatest rivers in terms of flow, and second only to the Waikato River among North Island rivers.
The Manawatu River flooded in February 2004, displacing over 2000 people (primarily from Marton and Feilding) and damaging over 1000 Manawatu farms.
