In colonial days the western or seaward side of the Manawatu consisted of a broad coastal zone of sand dunes and swamps, originally covered with scrub and coarse grass on the dunes, and mainly flax and raupo in the swamps.
Inland from this, the plains and undulating downlands were clothed in dense bush with excellent stands of totara, matai and rimu trees.
The land of the Manawatu itself was crossed by several rivers barely navigable by a vessel larger than a canoe or a whaleboat.

The city is situated about 140 km north of the capital, Wellington, in the centre of the Manawatu Plains, and close to the northern bank of the Manawatu River.
It is 35 km from the river's mouth and 12 km from the end of the Manawatu Gorge.

This 2-6-2 (Baldwin 1891) loco was a true 'high wheeler' and fitted with 49 inch (1245mm) drivers, the largest used on a steam locomotive in New Zealand up to that time.
This was the junction of the construction supply line built to bring rails from ships berthed at a nearby jetty in the Manawatu River and was known, I think, as the Buckley siding.
The line of the old formation can be seen curving away around the toe of the hill and the farm track heading towards the river is built over the original right-of-way.

Less than 5% of the land on New Zealand’s coastal plains is still in predominantly indigenous habitats, falling to less than 2% across much of the Southland and Manawatu coastal plains.
This paper presents the findings of a research project undertaken on the Manawatu Plains and on the Southland Plains to identify the full range of natural habitats, their natural character, their location, their ownership and institutional status, if any.
A total of 744 sites were mapped using ArcView GIS and then spatially analysed with reference to their potential contribution to the development of a strategic plan for the protection and enhancement of indigenous habitats on the coastal plains.
