The rich businessmen in Manchester who made their fortunes from the cotton industry, engineering, wool, sugar etc. wanted to create a cultural institution for the rich citizens of Manchester, a kind of gentlemen's club.
The building started as the "Royal Manchester Institution" (George IV granted his royal patronage to the Manchester Institution and the prefix "royal" was added to its name) and was built between 1829 and 1835 by an architect called Charles Berry, most famous for building the Houses of Parliament in London.
In 1882 the Royal Manchester Institution and its collection was taken over by the city and became the Manchester Art Gallery.

Decorative arts are another strength, and the strategy of exhibiting furniture and ceramics alongside paintings works well - though a bit of American Pop art furniture called a Marshmallow Love Seat makes the surrounding pictures look rather pale.
As a matter of fact, Manchester could do with some newer art, since it has an excellent collection of British art from the 19th and early 20th centuries, but grinds to a halt in the Seventies.
