The Jewish Museum of Manchester is an independent institution which operates under a private charter and is beholden only to its board of directors.
The museum runs an educational program aimed at students and adults alike; among the latter are policemen, church clubs, nurses and teachers.
Among other noteworthy contemporary Jewish figures were Werner Mayer, principal of the King David School; Nathan Laski, chief of the Jewish community till 1941 (his son was the politician, Harold Laski); and Joseph Massel.

The Jewish community in Manchester was founded in the 1780s, just as the city was developing as a centre of business and trade.
By the turn of the twentieth century, Manchester’s Jewish population of 35,000 made it the largest such community outside London.
As elsewhere in Britain, however, most Jewish families struck roots in Manchester during the period 1881–1914, that is, from the time of the Russian pogroms and the mass exodus of Eastern European Jews until the tightening-up of British immigration laws at the start of the Great War.

Rescued after closure, the building is now used as the Manchester Jewish Museum, opened in 1984.

A MUSEUM dedicated to victims of the Holocaust is to be built in Manchester.
The museum, to be built to the design of Daniel Liebeskind, is expected to be linked to other Holocaust centres in Israel, America and Europe.
Sir Sidney Hamburger, president of the project and elder statesman of the Manchester Jewish community, said: "The concept for the museum was considered in 1993 The museum will be an educational experience to show today's society the horrors of indifference."

From 13th September to the 12th November 2004 I was employed at Manchester Jewish Museum to input data from their written photographic records onto their Collections Management database, MODES.
MJM : PD1886 and was further subdivided into individual records for instance MJM : PD1886/1 MJM : PD1886/2 MJM : PD1886/3 and so on.
Where possible a brief family history has been added to the record, some of the paper records had lengthy family histories and family trees attached to them, I did not enter these details as I felt it more important to get a record onto the database quickly so that the photographic collection could be accessed.
