The following year the side finished eighth in the league and made the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but the demands made of a side like Manchester United meant that McGuinness was underachieving in his term at the club and it wasn't long before the axe swung and removed him from his job.
In the league, the club were run close for the entirety of the season by an Arsenal side that only the previous season had won the domestic double itself, before sealing their fifth championship in seven seasons.
