On August 22, 1985, Flight 28M, a Boeing 737-236 flying the colours of British Airtours, took off from Manchester International Airport in Manchester in England, on an international passenger flight to Kerkira Airport on the Greek island of Kerkira.
The fire found its way into the cabin, creating toxic smoke and causing the deaths of 53 passengers and two crew, 48 of them from smoke inhalation.
The incident raised serious air safety concerns over the standard aircraft emergency evacuation time of ninety seconds, since passengers were unable to escape despite the last passenger emerging after more than five minutes.

The Munich air disaster occurred on February 6, 1958, when Flight BE609, a British European Airways "Elizabethan" class Airspeed Ambassador charter aircraft G-ALZU 'Lord Burghley', carrying players and backroom staff of Manchester United F.C., plus a number of journalists and supporters, crashed in a blizzard on its third attempt to take off from Munich-Riem airport.
Manchester United entered the 1956-57 tournament and reached the semi-finals, being knocked out by eventual winners Real Madrid; they were thus one of the favourites for the 1957-58 tournament.
The Manchester Evening News (April 22, 2005) reported that the survivors had not been consulted and were concerned about how accurate the film would be.

RAWALPINDI, July 20: A major air disaster was averted early Sunday morning at the Islamabad international airport as the pilot of Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 747 with 264 people aboard aborted the take-off half-way through the runway on noticing faults in two of the engines.
The last radio contact with the aircraft was its clearance for take-off and there was no indication from air traffic control of any problem at that time, the source said, and added that there was no unusual communications between the cockpit and air traffic control.
Civil Aviation Authority officials said their air worthiness branch would also be conducting an inquiry for which a committee would be constituted shortly.

The German refueller, therefore, had little problem maintaining a foot grip as he walked over the wing, which was just as well, for he soon became an easy target for the snowballs thrown by the Manchester party as they disembarked for refreshments in the terminal building.

We and our luggage were transferred to a new connection to Manchester, but though we arrived OK one of our three luggage pieces (my 5-string banjo) failed to.
I have to say that the 747 cabin crew did the best they could in the circumstances, but the Purser was very unhelpful and unwilling to talk to me. I wanted to discuss the problem with him and explain that if they were more forthcoming the photos would remain private.
The Air France airport ground staff were wonderful - much, much better than were the British Airways airport staff after we once had a very unpleasant experience with them.
