EWM: Along the Mancunian Way Manchester's 'Highway in the Sky'
The Mancunian Way was intended to link into a network of local urban motorways, but on the maps it remains an isolated wavy blue line set amongst a tangled web of red and green A roads.
The Mancunian Way is a symbol of the new post-war Manchester, appearing shortly after the Piccadilly Plaza (1965) and around the same time as the Hulme Crescents.
In 1992 the Mancunian Way was extended with a new flyover at the A6, replacing the former roundabout and landscaped pedestrian footpaths.

Mancunian Films at Pride Of Manchester
But whatever the Southerners may have thought, at the time, there is no doubt that the arrival of Mancunian can be seen in retrospect as a harbinger, and precursor to the advent of television, and the emergence of Granada TV Studios.
Although the studios were located in Rusholme, Mancunian's registered office: Film Studios (Manchester) Limited, was more centrally located, at 3, The Parsonage, Manchester; occupying a prestigious suite in the old Calico Printers Association building, which towered over the rear of Deansgate.
Mancunian Film Studios' entire film archive was lost, when a blaze swept through Kay Laboratories, in 1980, resulting in the total loss of all the original nitrate masters, of every film made by the studio, between the Forties and mid-Fifties.

Hooray for Jollywood-The Life of John E. Blakeley & The Mancunian Film Corporation
John E. Blakeley was a rare breed in the annals of British film history for all the films he made were produced solely for northern audiences.
Another side to Randle was that of the businessman, for he also held a position on Mancunian’s board of directors and no doubt had his say in how the company operated.
Mancunian however, continued production, with John E’s son Tom Blakeley at the helm.

Travelling west from the start of Mancunian Way the first obvious attraction is the main UMIST campus to the right: note the UMIST crest on top of the 15 storey (and needs painting!) MSS (Mathematics and Social Science) building.
It also allows access (after a short journey underneath Mancunian Way itself) to the A5103, affectionately although incorrectly referred to as the Princess Parkway (actually Princess Road) - one of the main southern routes out of Manchester, leading to the M53 and M6 (South).
Continuing along Mancunian Way it is but a short journey to its westernmost conclusion - the junction with Chester Road - allowing an easy continuation of one's journey to Regent Road (A57) and the M602, heading west through Eccles towards the M62 and M60.

Mancunian Memories at Pride Of Manchester
Another youthful Mancunian shining light, was the lovely Sally Barnes - later to become a big television star comedienne, in her own right - who starred alongside Randle, in 'Holidays With Pay' (circa 1948), and in 'Somewhere In Politics' (circa 1949).
When we discovered that the UCLA Film and Television Archive in California were holding a copy of the film in their archives, we thought they probably didn't know what it was.
I don't know how the recently discovered version ended up to be in LA: but Mancunian had strong links with a US film director, who - in addition to assistant-directing some of the earlier Blakeley movies - later went on to direct Laurel and Hardy, for Hal Roach, in California.
