Mando Diao - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mando Diao are a garage rock band from Borlänge, Sweden.
According to the band, the name Mando Diao has no meaning at all, but rather appeared to band member Björn Dixgård in a dream.
The roots of Mando Diao date back to 1995 when Björn Dixgård was a member of a band called Butler.

Speaking of the Hives, it may be lazy criticism to compare Mando Diao to its better-known countrymen, but the band's sharp, strutting riffs and Gustaf Norén's raspy sneer of a voice share some obvious similarities.
Mando Diao's love of '60s soul and R&B -- or, at least, love of mod and British Invasion bands such as the Who and the Animals, who loved and were influenced by '60s soul and R&B -- adds a distinctive touch to the band's sound.
In some ways, Mando Diao's co-founder and other vocalist, Björn Dixgård, is the band's secret weapon: His rounded, throaty style of singing recalls everyone from Noel Gallagher to Eric Burdon to Tom Jones depending on its setting, providing the band with a duality that results in some of Bring 'Em In's best moments.

Technically, the origin of Mando Diao's pilfered sonics is probably closer to the likes of The Who, The Kinks, or Creation, but the British Invaders were just taking lessons from Motown, the Blues, and a little Chuck Berry anyway, so it's not like Mando Diao's more than one step removed from our musical ancestors.
It's to Mando Diao's credit that, as easy as it is to rattle off a litany of easy influences, they come out sounding very much their own entity.
Mando Diao is stealing our rock 'n' roll thunder, but if we can't produce anyone to offer them some competition, I suppose they're welcome to it.

The fellas in Mando Diao have been quick to distance themselves from the "new Swedish" sound, or whatever it is folks are labeling the spate of quality bands to recently come from Sweden.
In Mando Diao's case, the most prominent influence is a band like the Buzzcocks, who pair a bit of punk rock spasticity with an unshakable ear for classic pop of all types, be it Britpop or bubblegum.
What you should expect when you play Hurricane Bar, then, is a group of super-catchy songs with all of the little touches you've come to expect from pop songs ("aaaah" vocal harmonies behind the chorus, handclaps, you know the drill) with a nice, high-energy presentation that stops short of pop-punk territory.

SOUNDTHESIRENS.COM - Review :: Mando Diao - Bring 'em in
It is an unfair predicament to be in because these fun packed Swedes (yes, Sweden – can’t escape from it can they?) have written a record filled with some of the finest beat influenced rock jangles this side of the 50’s and 60’s.
They are a cosmic rekindling of The Who with graceful sprinklings of bluesy guitars and an uncaring sense of freedom that remains through the eras.
Mando Diao are simply fantastic in these depictions of moments.

I think Mando Diao stink to be honest, though they deserve respect and Sugerplum Fairy was just a hyped joke that used their brother's fame to get a label.
Well the taste is divided, for a fact sugarplum fairy were wellknown before Mando diao, they played at the great indiefestival Accelerator 2002 in july, before Mando diao had there debut on the Kalasturné and before mando diao released their first album later that autumn.
They are not at all the same as Mando diao but since they are younger they had to wait longer for a record label.

Mando Diao frontman Gustaf Norén has compared the band's second album, "Hurricane Bar," to "Pet Sounds" — which makes sense if he's talking about the sounds your pet makes when its tail gets stuck in the door rather than the classic Beach Boys record of the same title.
Still, you can see what Norén is getting at when he calls this Mando Diao's "pop" record: Many of the songs on the raucous "Bring 'Em In" sounded as if they had an implicit tempo that everyone was outracing.
Mando Diao are nothing like the Beach Boys and, contrary to Norén's nervy boasts, not better than the Beatles.

Mando Diao is who the Strokes and Hives would be if they spent a week listening to the Beatles and some good ol' blues before sitting down and working out their tracks.
They seemlessly mesh 60's rock, pop, some funk and blues into a perfectly crafted album that is much more deserving of the "saviors of rock" crown that is so adamantly given to The Strokes.
