The Acoustic Music Company - for guitars, mandolins and other folk music instruments
The Bluegrass Mandolin is based on two Gibson models introduced around the end of the 19th century.
Gibson promoted mandolin orchestras that consisted of the Mandolin, Mandola, Mandocello and the Mandobass.
The two main mandolin models were the A style and the F style - the A being teardrop shaped and the F having the added scroll (also known as Florentine) - both available at different times and now, with oval or f sound holes.

 The mandocello
Aka baritone mando, the mandocello is a guitar-sized (usually archtop style) mandolin tuned like a cello.
Coincidentally the mandocello is very similar to a tenor guitar.
The only real difference (apart from the tuning) is that the tenor guitar has single strings while the mandocello has double although the mandocello usually has a longer scale too.

Paul Doyle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The first one is a bouzouki, the second a mandocello.
The mandocello features a similar teardrop-shaped design, except that the body is bigger and the neck joins the body at the 12th fret instead of 15th.
Also the inlay round the soundhole is even simpler, and the hole to access the truss-rod is smaller, and not covered.

Mandocello Chords can be easily built without knowing the note names in the chord too and I'll show you how.
For intermediate or advanced players, the beginners section is a quick read that gets us on the same page as far as terminology is concerned but is so gradual you'll hardly notice it.

I hope that some folks might be interested in a brand-new project here, since it's a potential way to have yourself a good instrument without the long wait and heavy expense of either ordering something new or waiting until what you want comes on the market used.
Even before the mandocello was finished, I had prepared two bridges for it: one of European maple, and one of American, both quarter-sawn.
Apparently mandocello bridge length is quite important, and on this particular instrument, 5½" is better than shorter lengths.

Lark In The Morning - The Mandocello
Like the cello the mandocello is tuned CGDA an octave below the viola/mandola, and along with the rare mandobass and the guitar provided the bass in the mandolin orchestra.
Obviously, the mandocello is much larger than a mandolin, and some differences in left hand technique are required, similar to the differences in violin and cello.
The modern 5 course Irish bouzoukis or citterns can play mandocello parts when tuned to the CGDAE tuning, which is both mandocello and octave mandolin tuning combined.

The Daffy Mandocello is based on the Stella-style 12-string guitar, which is a copy of the great Leadbelly's guitar.
The large sound chamber and larger scale length give a deep rich sound, as this instrument is 'tuned down' a tone and a half, with the normal E-strings being tuned to a C#.
The Mandocello has the same body but may have a 24.9" scale and thinner neck if required.

Mandozine calls the mandocello "the Mastodon of the mandolin family".
I've been playing this since 1995; I acquired it for use at the Renaissance Fair, since steel-string dreadnought guitars are historically anachronistic for events meant to appear as they were 400 years ago.
This one has a particularly resonant tone, which is remarkable, considering that it had a very similar history to that of the mandocello above, being neglected for many years and finally restored to glorious playability.

A little light relief is called for, and it's duly supplied with "Things I Learnt This Year," an amusing and observant litany of "truisms," which features the contributions of several friends on backing vocals, mandocello, bodhran and melodeon.
Too intelligent, lyrical and acoustic to be described as pop and too populist to remain entirely in the folk camp, Show of Hands might just have invented an English equivalent of Country music.
