Though this was the Dutch band's third album, it was the first to dabble in a more mellow, atmospheric sound.
This may be the album's most "progressive" and "epic" song due to those transitions alone -- it's difficult to tell which direction The Gathering wants to pull you in.
This album is eleven years old, and I'll be the first to tell you that it's aged quite well.

The Gathering (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While their first two albums - Always (1992) and Almost a Dance (1993) were quite typical, although refined death metal albums, which were recorded with two different vocalists, their following Mandylion (1995) on which Anneke van Giersbergen sang for the first time, was a beautifully written, dark, haunting and emotional piece of music.
It was also one of the first albums of its kind in respect to female fronted metal bands, and is still considered a standard in the genre.
On this album, Bart's grunts were accompanied by the female vocals of Marike Groot, who also joined the Gathering on stage for most of the gigs.

While the first part focused on albums from bands that have been splitted or that remain in anonymity, this special will focus on bands that either have changed their musical direction after their “little diamonds”, or they have just disappointed.
Albums like “Walls Of Never” that contains “Missing You” a song that is the best I have heard from the band so far, and “Circle Of Pain”, may not be to the standards of “Mephisto”, but surely are good albums.
The album goes on this way, exploring places and the lands that were never visited lyrically or musically.

Mandylion is one of most popular albums they have ever made among their fans.
The Foolishness of God seems to be a concept album which is based on the man who struggles his belief and faith in complex modern society with ideas of Christian belief/faith from band members (I assume).
I am kind of impressed with the message and concept on this album that represents the man who is struggling in modern day life, and how to deal with his faith against outside pressure and inside conflicts.

The vocals of anneke van giersbergen are a joy to behold and her voice is every bit as beautiful and powerful as the wonderfulx2 sharon den adel of within temptation and cristina scabbia of lacuna coil.
This album is a classic in my humble opinion and if you are a fan of the two aforesaid bands this album is a must have.
Listen to Mandylion and then to Sleepy Buildings and it's hard to believe they are by the same band (except of course that Anneke's beautiful singing is a dead giveaway).

Mandylion is actually the first album to feature Anneke's beautiful voice, but it's actually not the first Gathering album.
For the most part, Mandylion was sort of a crossover album for the band, as it displayed much of the metal instrumental prowess of the previous releases, but also hinted at the more quiet accoustic nature of the newer albums.
However, Mandylion is a fine start for any newcomer and without a doubt is sure to go down as a classic by any means.

Mandylion, the band's first with vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen, was indeed a classic and a milestone, but I would argue that it would come off unnatural for this group to continue playing that particular vein of music.
Defying analytical description and genre pigeonholing, the album is vaguely in the same territory as The 3rd and the Mortal on In This Room, shirking the avantgarde and freakout tendencies of that band.
If_then_else's main advantage over its double album predecessor is that the shorter length of the album allows the record to be much more focused and able to retain the attention span of the average listener.

This album is one of the most innovative albums ever committed to recording media, and the only thing I wonder is why "common" people were able to get into the songs that got heavy radio airplay, particularly "Shock the Monkey" and to a lesser extent "The Rhythm of the Heat" and "San Jacinto".
Already their first album shows that this is a very original band with a level of the complexity of compositions that can be quite compared to the most serious albums of the '70s.
Most of the songs on the album are marked by the constant development of both the instrumental and vocal arrangements, kaleidoscopic changes of tempo, tone, and mood, very complex stop-to-play movements, and the complete absence of even meters.

The second half is a bit weaker, which keeps Mandylion from being truly phenomenal, as "Fear The Sea", despite more excellent vocals and a fascinating 'sea' musical emulation in the solo section, is mostly unmemorable, and like I said before, the title track is peaceful, but not much else.
As a whole, Mandylion isn't perfect (like everyone else says), but only one of the songs is less-than-stellar, and the rest is consist of four excellent songs, a great song and two good songs.

It’s a fact, that “Mandylion” was the first record with Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals and that it is the until now most successful album of the Dutch.
The third album of THE GATHERING has it all, every song is completely different from each other and far between, you could already recognize the band’s sense for experimentation.
To say it short, this album represents indeed the complete contrast to that, what is the today’s majority of works in this genre.

Smits was replaced primarily by Niels Duffhues, a strange choice for the band; Duffhues' punk-ish tone was decidedly out of step with the music, and the album was largely written off as a result.
The album also featured occasional vocals by Martine van Loon, a low-key singer with a pretty tone but one that seldom took to the forefront of a composition.
It would appear that the seed had been planted in the band's head to try their uniquely compelling songwriting style with a passionate female vocalist; the result was the addition of the incomparable Anneke van Giersbergen, an incredible singer capable of stretching miles of emotion out of each and every syllable.

Mandylion was already written, again without really having a vocalist in mind, but since they'd already written the album for the most part, and had all this music, all I had to do once I got accepted into the band was make these vocal lines and melodies to fit what they'd already done.
The heavier, earlier albums gave way to the more psychedelic, which led into nearly ambient/electronica at some points, then the live acoustic from last year came along.
That album means something to a lot of people, though, so we can't just leave it out altogether.

Although some will credit this as the first true gothic metal album, that is just off the mark completely as it really belongs to Paradise Lost and their 1991 release “Gothic” (almost too appropriate that the first of a genre is named after the album itself).

Blistering.com Review: The Gathering - Mandylion Deluxe Edition
Ten years on from it’s original release, The Gathering’s third album Mandylion still sounds as fresh, innovative and genre defying as it did back in 1995, and still remains the benchmark by which many female fronted progressive/gothic groups are measured by today.
The album’s lead off single ‘Strange Machines’ was the first to show off The Gathering’s new sound, and although somewhat simplistic and straightforward in structure, the song garnished the band a position in the charts, along with a whole new audience.
Apart from the album Mandylion itself, Century Media Records have also managed to finally wipe the vaults clean with an additional disc of previously unreleased demos, making the package a companion piece of sorts to the Accessories: Rarities & B-Sides compilation released earlier this year.
