Maned Rat - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The Maned Rat (Lophiomys imhausi), also known as the Crested Rat, is a long-haired and bushy-tailed East African rodent that resembles a porcupine.
It is named for its mane of long, coarse, fl-and-white-banded hairs that begins at the top of the head and extends beyond the base of the tail.
The rat is particularly skilled at climbing trees, although it chooses to nest in burrows or rock formations on the ground.

Mane Attraction -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In Roman mythology, the Manes ("good ones") were similar to the Lares, Genii and Di Penates.
The mane is the term, when speaking of a horse or lion, used to describe the line of hair along the spine of the neck, starting behind the ears and ending just above the withers.
When the horse/lion is born, the mane is a short, stiff, upright row of hair, not unlike a zebra's, but as the horse/lion ages the mane grows out and softens.

Separated geographically by the Atlantic Ocean and genetically by millions of years of evolution, the serval and the maned wolf--one cat, one dog-- are hardly close relatives, but both have evolved similar body forms and use the same hunting behaviors.
A maned wolf is similarly lanky; tall as a Great Dane, it weighs only 23 kilograms (60 lbs.) against the Dane's robust 45 kilograms (120 lbs.).
In the animal kingdom, long legs usually mean speed, but neither the serval nor the maned wolf are particularly fast runners; rather their legs are long so they can hear better.

Many island birds, like the dodo, which became extinct within about 80 years of being discovered by Europeans in the Mauritius Islands of the Indian Ocean, or the great auk of the North Atlantic islands, are flightless.
The species appetite turned out to be so eclectic that even when it had wiped out birds, rats, and shrews, it dined on skinks, geckos and spareribs.
The "blitzkrieg" theory holds that the animals were quite overwhelmed by the prowess of armed and hungry hoards of human hunters suddenly in their midst, and failed to survive first contact, just as the Stephen Island wren failed to survive first contact with a single cat.
