The Fifth Symphony is, therefore, like the Fourth, about the conflict between freedom and predestination, which in Tchaikovsky´s terms meant the conflict between will and natural inclination, particularly the homosexual inclination that brought him so much personal anguish and creative energy.
The motto or "fate" theme is heard in the introduction as a slow march in E minor, led by the clarinets, and whenever it returns it does so in march rhythm, against prevailing triple and compound metres.
The main body of the first movement is in 6/8, sometimes with a waltz feeling that prepares for the third movement, while the key of the last of the three subjects, D major, looks forward to the second movement.

Manfred Symphony - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The origin of this symphony dates back to previous years, where Hector Berlioz came to inspire many Russian composers.
Mily Balakirev had the original idea, though he thought it was not in his character to engage in such composition, for as he explained in a letter to Tchaikovsky in October 9 1882, 'this magnificent subject is unsuitable, it doesn't harmonise with my inner frame of mind'.
The subject was forgotten for a couple of years until 1885, when Tchaikovsky purchased a copy of Byron's 'Manfred' and engaged in composing the symphony.

Manfred is often called a symphonic poem, but it is really a dramatic symphony in four movements.
After a little time the peaceful atmosphere is shattered by the Manfred theme, but on the sound of a bell (directed to be played as if heard from a distance) the turbulence gradually subsides and we return to the original peaceful mood.
That Manfred is not very often heard in the concert halls is due firstly to the immense difficulty of some of the parts, which tax even instrumentalists of the greatest virtuosity, and the very large orchestra demanded.

Manfred - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manfred was a 1817 poem by Lord Byron, and is considered by some to be his response to the ghost story craze sweeping through England at the time.
Manfred was adapted musically by Robert Schumann in 1852, in a composition entitled Manfred: Dramatic Poem in Three Parts, and later by Pyotr Tchaikovsky in his Manfred Symphony, Op.

Manfred dies, and does find peace (this being Tchaikovsky's hopeful interpretation of Byron's far less rosy text), first in a stentorian blaze of C-major glory, then in quiet intimations of paradise over a repeated bass figure, similar in many ways to the close of The Fairy's Kiss.

Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony grew out of a 4-movement plan sent to him in 1882 by the Russian composer Mily Balakirev.
On this occasion however, Tchaikovsky was not immediately taken with the idea of a 'Manfred' symphony, but two years later when he visited St Petersburg, then the Russian capital, he met up with Balakirev and amongst other things discussed the 'Manfred' idea again.

Gliere's Ilya Muramets: a "Wagner Symphony"
Reinhold Gliere’s Symphony No. 3 (1911), Ilya Muramets, carried into the twentieth century a host of great legacies of the nineteenth century: one is first struck by its distinctly Russian sound, its rich orchestral palette reminiscent of Rimsky-Korsakov, and its splendid melodies, reminiscent of Tchaikovsky.
But Ilya Muramets is more: like the great symphonies of Anton Bruckner and Gustav Mahler, it is a "Wagner Symphony." It achieves a marriage between the expanded expressive range of music achieved by Richard Wagner in his great music-dramas and the classical form of the symphony first brought to perfection by the First Viennese School.
This is a scheme sometimes used in the symphonies of the late nineteenth century, most familiarly in the first movement to Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony.

The Manfred Symphony was Tchaikovsky's most ambitious and, at 55 minutes' performance time, largest symphonic project.
Tchaikovsky was also wary of being perceived to imitate Berlioz, not least for appropriating the French composer's use of an idée fixe, a theme to identify the tragic hero, used recurrently throughout.
If Manfred is comprised of four discrete tone poems, they share material inventions with lucid effect and distinctive economy.
